Sony raises the price of the PlayStation 5.

Sony increased the price of the standard PS5 by $100 (over 2.6 million VND) and the Pro version to $900 due to "the global economic context".

According to several sources, Sony has officially increased the retail price of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) to $649.99, a jump of $100 from the previous price. This is the second time Sony has increased the price of the PS5 since its launch, and it is considered a "very aggressive price increase".

The new pricing will take effect from May 1, 2026, and will affect the entire Southeast Asian region, including the Vietnamese market. On Sony Vietnam's online store, the PS5 is still priced at over 14.7 million VND, but is currently out of stock.

The standard version wasn't the only device to be adjusted. The PS5 Pro's price now reaches a staggering $899.99, pushing Sony's high-end hardware into a price segment few would have dared to imagine at the start of this console generation.

The Japanese manufacturer cited the "global economic context" as the primary reason for the decision. In reality, this is a general term used by corporations to refer to all the fluctuations, from supply chain pressures to far-reaching tariff changes, that are significantly impacting the market in 2026.

For the gaming community, this is a hard time to accept. Having to spend $649 on a console that launched at $499 is a major hurdle, especially when the Nintendo Switch 2 dominated US hardware sales in March, surpassing the PS5 in both units sold and revenue.

Observers believe Sony is betting that its roster of exclusive games and loyalty to the PlayStation ecosystem will retain users. However, the $100 price increase inadvertently gives competitors an advantage "in the current economic climate." Even so, in the current market, both Microsoft and Nintendo have had to adjust the prices of their hardware and accessories in recent months.

Meanwhile, Valve has been forced to delay the announcement of pricing and shipping schedules for the upcoming Steam Machine due to the direct impact of RAM shortages. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa also warned that the current situation could put "significant pressure on the company's profit margins."
