Quang Ngai province is about to have two new commune names: Thang Loi and An Phu.

The People's Committee of Quang Ngai province has submitted a proposal to the Provincial People's Council for approval of the merger of administrative units. In the future, Quang Ngai will have some unfamiliar commune names: Thang Loi and An Phu.

On June 17th, the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province submitted a proposal to the Provincial People's Council requesting approval of a resolution on the reorganization of communes and towns in the province, for the period 2023-2025.

According to the proposal, the two communes of Duc Thang and Duc Loi (Mo Duc district) will merge their entire natural area and population, and be renamed Thang Loi commune; the communes of Nghia An and Nghia Phu (Quang Ngai city) will also merge similarly and be renamed An Phu commune.

Additionally, a portion of the area and population of Nghia My and Nghia Phuong communes will be merged into Song Ve town (Tu Nghia district). The remaining part of Nghia My commune will be merged into the remaining part of Nghia Phuong commune and renamed Nghia Phuong commune.

In theadministrative unit merger proposed by the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee, the district and commune authorities had previously consulted with voters and unanimously passed resolutions at the district and commune levels.

In addition to mergers, the restructuring of the organizational apparatus and civil servants is also being considered. Cases of surplus personnel will be addressed through appropriate policies and regulations. Regarding office buildings and public assets, appropriate and efficient solutions are being developed.

Quang Ngai province has a natural area of over 5,155 ^km² and a population of 1.3 million people. Currently, the province has 13 district-level administrative units and 173 commune-level administrative units.

Based on the regulations of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the rearrangement of district and commune-level administrative units for the period 2023-2030, Quang Ngai province will have 2 district-level administrative units and 9 commune-level administrative units subject to rearrangement during the 2023-2025 period. In the coming time, the province will study and implement the rearrangement, ensuring it is consistent with the geographical boundaries, culture , and history.

One of the most pressing concerns for people regarding the merger of communes and districts is whether to choose new names or retain the old ones to better suit the culture and history of the region.

Regarding the merger of the four communes into two new communes, An Phu and Thang Loi, the local people are very supportive. Many believe the new name is nice and appropriate, and also serves as a reminder of the past for future generations.

"The merger of Duc Thang and Duc Loi communes into Thang Loi commune is a good idea. We support this new name. However, we hope the authorities will consider simplifying administrative procedures to avoid the need for complicated paperwork that could affect people's lives," said Mr. Toan (from Duc Loi commune).
