This is a question that many Binh Duong fans sarcastically commented on after the match.
On the evening of June 26th, a foul by center-back Que Ngoc Hai inside the penalty area led to Binh Duong FC's 2-3 defeat against hosts Song Lam Nghe An in the semi-finals of the 2024-2025 National Cup.
The score was 2-2 in the 90th minute. Just as Hai "Que" was about to put his arm around Olaha's armpit to mark him, Olaha immediately fell to the ground inside the penalty area, forcing FIFA referee Hoang Ngoc Ha to point to the penalty spot. Olaha successfully converted the penalty, bringing victory to the Nghe An team.
With his extensive experience on the field, no one expected Que Ngoc Hai to commit such a foul like a young player! But at 32 years old, it's difficult for the former steely center-back of Vietnamese football to maintain the fitness, speed, and ball-playing skills that once made him his trademark.
This is also not surprising, considering Que Ngoc Hai's unconvincing performances in 22 out of 26 matches in the V-League 2024-2025.
Binh Duong FC has conceded 40 goals in 26 matches, the fourth highest among the 14 participating teams, after Quy Nhon Binh Dinh (43 goals),SHB Da Nang (42 goals), and Hoang Anh Gia Lai (41 goals). This poor result is also partly due to Que Ngoc Hai - the player with the highest transfer fee at the team from the Southeast region.
It was Que Ngoc Hai's poor form that led to him not being given a chance to play for the Vietnamese national team by coach Kim Sang Sik from November 2024 until now.
Most recently, they assembled for the crucial match against Malaysia in the second round of Group F of the final qualifying stage for the 2027 Asian Cup last June.
Despite the injuries to center-backs Bui Hoang Viet Anh and Nguyen Thanh Binh, coach Kim Sang Sik chose to add Dang Van Toi and promote Pham Ly Duc from the U22 team, instead of considering former Vietnam national team captain Que Ngoc Hai.
Returning to the 2024-2025 National Cup semi-final against his hometown team, Song Lam Nghe An, Que Ngoc Hai collapsed at the most crucial moment of the match. Therefore, the anger of Binh Duong fans towards him is understandable, as they believe he was showing gratitude to his former team.
But surely Que Ngoc Hai wouldn't be foolish enough to do that! Because if he wins against Song Lam Nghe An and reaches the final, he and B.Binh Duong Club will have a chance to win the championship.
At 32 years old, that could be the last trophy of his career. So, Que Ngoc Hai certainly wouldn't trade it for that foul in the penalty area.
Therefore, it could only have been an accident, and that's because he's old!
