The U.S. Congress returns to work this week with a host of pressing legislative issues to address, amid shrinking time for congressional activity ahead of the midterm elections and emerging disagreements within the Republican Party, the majority party in both U.S. legislative bodies.
According to the VNA correspondent in Washington, one of the top priorities currently is the budget package for immigration law enforcement.
According to the plan, the Republican Party wants to allocate approximately $72 billion to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol.
However, this process is stalled following debates surrounding a nearly $2 billion compensation fund proposed by the Justice Department to support those allegedly victims of the politically motivated use of public office.
In the Senate, many Republican senators have asked the Department of Justice to clarify the criteria for fund payments, particularly whether those convicted in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol Hill riots are eligible for compensation.
Besides budget issues, the US Congress also has to deal with extending Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) before the June 12 deadline.
This regulation allows authorities to collect contact information of foreign nationals outside of the United States, but it is facing opposition from lawmakers concerned about privacy rights due to fears that the data of American citizens could be indirectly collected.
Meanwhile, Democrats are expected to continue pushing for votes related to limiting the president's war powers over Iran, while also proposing a $1.3 billion military aid package for Ukraine.
The U.S. Congress has also begun considering the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which could pave the way for the allocation of approximately $1.15 trillion to the Department of Defense.
Observers believe the coming weeks will be crucial for the Republican Party's ability to fulfill President Donald Trump's legislative priorities before Congress enters the midterm election campaign.
