Unlike many other professions, teachers will have an additional summer vacation after the end of the school year. Notably, teachers' summer vacation time at the present time is also adjusted in an open direction, different from before.
In 2025, will teachers need to be on summer duty?
Article 13, Clause 1 of the 2010 Law on Civil Servants stipulates that teachers who are civil servants are entitled to annual leave, holidays, and personal leave in accordance with the provisions of the law on labor. Due to work requirements, civil servants who do not use or do not use up their annual leave days will be paid a sum of money for the days not taken.

Currently, there is no regulation requiring teachers to be on duty during the summer. If the school has a plan to arrange for teachers to participate in summer duty and the teachers agree, the teachers will receive overtime pay during the summer duty.
Teachers who are civil servants when working overtime are entitled to benefits according to the provisions of law and regulations of public service units.
Accordingly, Article 98 of the 2019 Labor Code stipulates that employees working overtime on holidays, New Year's Day, and paid leave days must be at least 300%, not including holiday wages, New Year's Day, and paid leave days for employees receiving daily wages.
Employees working at night shall be paid an additional amount of at least 30% of their wages calculated according to the unit price of wages or actual wages paid for the work of a normal working day.
At the same time, employees who work overtime at night, in addition to being paid according to the above regulations, will also be paid an additional 20% of their salary calculated according to the salary unit price or salary according to the work done during the day on holidays and Tet.
Therefore, teachers need to master these regulations to ensure their rights in the 2024-2025 school year and the upcoming summer vacation.
Teachers' summer vacation is 8 weeks.
According to Circular 05/2025 regulating the working regime for general education teachers issued by the Ministry of Education and Training , effective from April 22, the annual summer vacation for teachers of preschools, general education institutions, and specialized schools is 8 weeks, including annual leave.
Summer vacation for secondary school teachers and college lecturers is 6 weeks. Summer vacation for university lecturers is according to the regulations of organization and operation of the institution.
During the summer vacation, teachers are still responsible for participating in the following activities as required by competent authorities: Participate in training and development to improve professional qualifications and skills according to job requirements; Participate in organizing high school graduation exams; Participate in enrollment.
Similarly, the summer vacation of the principal and vice principal is flexibly arranged during the school year and during the summer vacation of teachers, in order to maintain the normal operation of the school and promptly carry out tasks summoned by the superior management agency (if any). The summer vacation schedule of the principal and vice principal must be reported to the competent management agency or according to the hierarchy.
