(HBĐT) - As scheduled, since August, farmers in the Wenzhou tangerine growing areas in Cao Phong district have been busy in their gardens preparing orders from retailers. This is an early-ripening tangerine variety, the first to be harvested in the citrus fruit crop year in the district.

Visiting the Wenzhou tangerine garden of the Cao Phong Agricultural Products Cooperative (3T Farm), Cao Phong town, most of the fruits are ripe, with fragrant peels and a strong oil smell. Busy in the garden cutting tangerines according to orders to deliver to customers from early morning, Ms. Vu Thi Le Thuy, Director of 3T Farm Cooperative said: After a period of renovating and re-planning the garden, the Cooperative now has nearly 100 Wenzhou tangerine trees and has entered the 8th year of harvest. Currently, the tangerines in the garden are ripe, sweet enough, with a characteristic aromatic oil smell. The Cooperative applies the VietGAP production process, so the quality of the tangerines has not changed over the years but has been increasingly improved, from flavor to design and product packaging. At the beginning of the season, the Cooperative sold tangerines at a wholesale price of 35,000 VND/kg. For nearly 2 weeks now, every day there have been customers from near and far placing orders early. In addition to traders placing large orders, many customers are families placing orders to serve the needs of burning incense on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, or as gifts. To avoid brand counterfeiting, after the preliminary processing and washing of the fruit, all tangerines are affixed with traceability stamps before being packed and sent to customers.
In shops and markets in Cao Phong district and other localities in the province, Wenzhou tangerines have been sold in large quantities. The price of tangerines at the beginning of the season ranges from 20,000 to 35,000 VND/kg depending on the type of tangerine chosen, whether it is a bucket or a bottle... According to some garden owners in Cao Phong district, due to the small quantity planted and the low price of fruit this year, tangerines are easy to sell. Many gardeners are only focusing on paying orders from traders far away and have almost run out of output, not waiting until the tangerines ripen at the end of the season.
In Cao Phong district, On Chau tangerines are intercropped with other main orange varieties such as: yellow-heart oranges, Canh oranges, Xa Doai oranges, Mart oranges... Tangerines usually ripen around the beginning of the 8th lunar month. The peak harvest period lasts about 40 - 45 days, after which gardeners switch to harvesting other early-season oranges such as yellow-heart oranges and Mart oranges. On Chau tangerines have a characteristic oil smell, thin, juicy skin, yellow pulp and no seeds, can be peeled by hand and eaten directly or squeezed for juice. Comrade Bui Van Dan, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cao Phong district, said: In recent years, On Chau tangerines have increasingly affirmed their brand and quality, trusted by consumers because growers strictly follow the production process and techniques, helping to ensure the quality of tangerines. The selling price is therefore quite stable, On Chau tangerines are favored by many customers in and outside the province such as Hanoi , Hai Phong, Ninh Binh... Almost every year the tangerines are sold out before the end of the season.
With increasingly affirmed quality and brand, the economic value of Wenzhou tangerines is not small. To protect, preserve and develop the brand, every year, the Party Committee, the government as well as growers and people in the district make efforts to coordinate in implementing measures, promoting propaganda and advertising products to consumers inside and outside the province. Thereby contributing to improving product quality, minimizing counterfeiting and brand-name impersonation for profit.
