This is the first State visit by a key Vietnamese leader to Egypt in 7 years, and to Angola in 17 years, aiming to strengthen political trust, further deepen traditional friendship, thereby creating momentum and opening a new phase of cooperation, especially in economics and trade between Vietnam and Egypt and Angola as well as African countries.
Located in North Africa, the Arab Republic of Egypt is one of the leading countries in Africa in terms of economic scale and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). In 2024, Egypt's GDP will reach 380 billion USD. FDI focuses on green energy, oil and gas, real estate, manufacturing, financial services and construction. The main economic sectors include tourism, oil, textiles, agricultural processing, chemicals, construction... Egypt's main exports are crude oil, oil products, cotton, garments, mechanical products, chemicals, agriculture and its main imports are machinery, wood products, fuel.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1963, the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Egypt has achieved remarkable achievements and expanded in many fields. Bilateral relations have reached new heights with state visits by leaders of the two countries and exchanges of high-level delegations. Egypt was the first North African country to recognize Vietnam as a full market economy (November 2013).
Egypt is an important market for Vietnam in the region with bilateral trade turnover reaching 541.36 million USD in 2024, the highest in North Africa, of which Vietnam has a trade surplus of 472.63 million USD.
The Communist Party of Vietnam and the MPLA Party in Angola maintain a good traditional relationship of solidarity and friendship, which was formed before the two countries gained national independence. With the establishment of diplomatic relations on November 12, 1975, Vietnam was the second country in the world to establish diplomatic relations with Angola, just one day after the African country declared independence. The two countries regularly coordinate and support each other in multilateral forums, especially within the framework of the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. Angola recognized Vietnam's full market economy status in April 2008.
Trade cooperation between Vietnam and Angola has made positive progress, with trade turnover in 2024 reaching nearly 250 million USD. Vietnam mainly exports rice, textiles, coffee, confectionery, cereal products, etc. and imports wood, wood products, liquefied gas, etc. Regarding investment, as of December 2024, Angola has 4 investment projects in Vietnam with a total registered investment capital of 118.4 million USD. Vietnam has 4 investment projects in Angola with a total registered investment capital of 2.98 million USD.
President Luong Cuong's visit to Egypt and Angola aims to continue implementing the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification, multilateralization of foreign relations, proactive and active integration into the world comprehensively and extensively, and raising the level of relations with African countries. The visit aims to convey the message of the new era of national development, in which the desire to contribute more responsibly and actively to solving common issues of the international community, while demonstrating the respect of friendly countries for the increasingly important role and position of Vietnam in the Southeast Asia and Asia-Pacific regions.
Egypt and Angola wish to promote multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam and, through Vietnam, strengthen cooperation with countries and multilateral organizations in the region.
The State visit of President Luong Cuong to Egypt and Angola demonstrates Vietnam's consistent policy of always attaching importance to relations with traditional friendly partners in Africa, wishing to create a breakthrough, elevate relations, establish a new cooperation framework between Vietnam and Egypt, promote cooperation with Angola, open a new page in the cooperative relations between Vietnam and the two above-mentioned countries; promote cooperation with the two major economies in Africa, in accordance with the potential, strengths and development needs of each country, for the benefit of the people of each country, for peace and development in the region and the world.
