A humanoid robot named "Tiangong" became the center of attention at the Beijing Half Marathon in China, where it crossed the finish line alongside the runners.

According to Global Times , the race started at 8 a.m. (local time), covering a distance of 21.09 km. As the athletes approached the finish line, attention was drawn to a black robot standing on the sidelines, waving to encourage them.

The robot then entered the race track, running alongside the participants for about 100 meters before the finish line. During the race, the robot also frequently waved and encouraged the participants, acting as a pacer to guide the athletes to the finish line.

Zhejiang Television reported that this is the first time in the history of an international marathon that a pace-setting robot has been used in a race.

Reportedly, Tiangong is the first generation of electric-powered humanoid robots produced by the Beijing Intelligent Robotics Innovation Center.

Standing at 163 cm tall and weighing 43 kg, this robot runs steadily at a speed of 10 km/h and can reach a maximum speed of up to 12 km/h. The robot is built on an open-source platform and comes in two versions: "Tiangong 1.0 LITE" and "Tiangong Pro".

This initiative not only helps reduce development costs but also fosters a unified platform, enabling easier technology transfer.

Experts say the Tiangong robot has the potential to set new standards in the field of humanoid robots, while also boosting China's technological advancements in AI and robotics.

With its sophisticated design, Tiangong can move smoothly across various complex terrains, such as climbing stairs, rough surfaces, sandy terrain, etc.

The manufacturer stated that, with its ability to operate independently and run very long distances, the robot could take on a monitoring role along race tracks, detect unusual crowd movement or emergency situations, and quickly alert security personnel.

At crowded events, robots equipped with medical supplies can quickly move around the venue to deliver emergency equipment such as defibrillators.
