Will robots soon be able to create their own kind without humans?

Startup Humanoid and Schaeffler Group are creating a model of "self-replicating" robots where the robots themselves participate in manufacturing components for the next generation.

A partnership between the British humanoid robotics startup Humanoid and the German industrial conglomerate Schaeffler is shaking up the tech world, opening up the prospect of robots independently participating in the manufacturing of their "kind" in future automated factories.

According to the newly announced agreement, the Humanoid robot will not only transport goods but will also directly participate in the assembly lines of precision components at Schaeffler's factory, including the actuators that are considered the "muscles" of the humanoid robot.

What's most noteworthy is that the actuators manufactured by Schaeffler, with the operational support of Humanoid robots, will then be sold back to this startup to assemble new generations of robots.

This symbiotic model is being called by experts a "partial self-replicating loop," where robots are no longer just end products but become a direct link in a closed industrial production ecosystem.

Humanoid is reportedly aiming to deploy up to 100,000 humanoid robots by 2031, a number powerful enough to create an automation revolution comparable to the world's largest automotive production lines today.

Notably, instead of focusing on bipedal robots for technology demonstration purposes, Humanoid and Schaeffler prioritized wheeled robots due to their stability, energy efficiency, and ability to operate continuously for many hours in real-world industrial environments.

Analysts believe Schaeffler's strategy is quite similar to Nvidia's model in the AI era, not only aiming to use robots but also to become a provider of core hardware infrastructure for the entire global humanoid robotics industry.

If this ambition succeeds, the world could soon enter a new era where robots not only replace human labor in factories but also directly participate in creating the next generation of robots, ushering in a nearly fully automated, self-operating supply chain.
