The custom of burning the Đình Liệu fire is closely associated with the Động Bồng communal house and the cultural space of the ancient village of Động Bồng. According to the elders in the village, the custom of burning Đình Liệu has existed for a long time, closely linked to the spiritual life and beliefs of the community. For the people of Động Bồng for generations, the Đình Liệu fire not only signifies bidding farewell to the old year but also symbolizes light, faith, and aspirations for a harmonious new year.
From the morning of February 12th (the 25th day of the 12th lunar month), people of Dong Bong village, young and old, men and women, were all present at the village communal house, busily preparing for the ritual of burning the communal house's ancestral tablets.
To prepare for building the communal house, starting in the twelfth lunar month, villagers would go into the mountains together to cut down lè lè trees – a type of bamboo with a small, hollow, flexible trunk containing flammable oil – and dry them.
Thanks to the skill and artistry of the local people, the communal house – the dragon – is constructed tall and sturdy, in accordance with the beliefs and customs of the people.
Along with building the communal house, the villagers divided up the tasks, each person doing a different job. The elderly cleaned the religious artifacts and decorated the communal house grounds.
The women cleaned and decorated the village temple grounds.
Along with preparing for the rituals of the traditional burning of communal houses, the people of Dong Bong village also prepare materials for making swing games during the spring days.
After a day of focused and collaborative work, the tall bamboo swing was completed right in the village courtyard. This will be the space for people to participate in folk games during the first days of spring. According to the villagers, the game not only trains agility, dexterity, and courage but also symbolizes the hope for a peaceful new year.
This year, preparations will extend until the 29th day of the 12th lunar month. The atmosphere of preparation is not only about work but also an opportunity to strengthen community bonds. In the temple courtyard, the elderly watch the construction of the temple while recounting to the younger generation the meaning of beautiful customs and cultural traditions.
