Rummenigge: 'Unfortunately for Wirtz, Woltemade is too expensive'

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, former CEO and now Bayern Munich advisor, has openly criticized the two high-profile deals of Liverpool and Newcastle this past summer.

Florian Wirtz chose to join Liverpool, instead of Bayern.

Speaking to Welt , Rummenigge said that Florian Wirtz, who left Leverkusen for Liverpool for £116 million, should have chosen Bayern: “I feel sorry for Wirtz because I believe he would be better off at Bayern than at Liverpool.” This comment was seen as bitterness, as Bayern had high hopes of owning the brightest “gem” of German football but was ultimately rejected.

Not stopping there, Rummenigge also targeted Nick Woltemade - Newcastle's new recruit who cost £65 million: "We could sign Woltemade, but Bayern shouldn't go after all the financial madness." Ironically, Bayern spent the same amount of money to buy Luis Diaz from Liverpool, making the public even more skeptical about his argument.

In fact, Wirtz has yet to make an impact at Anfield, having failed to score or assist. Woltemade, on the other hand, scored on his Newcastle debut, proving that he was not a bad choice. Bayern had to turn to loaning Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea as a backup for Harry Kane.

Despite the criticism, Rummenigge still insists Bayern are capable of competing this season: "We have a strong team. When Musiala, Davies and Ito return, the team will be more complete."

The 69-year-old legend’s statement underscores the reality: Bayern can no longer easily dominate the domestic transfer market. The Premier League is growing strongly, attracting even the brightest German talents, while Bayern is forced to face the risk of having their “domestic goods” taken away by English clubs that they once had an advantage over.
