Samsung has long favored a circular design for its Galaxy Watch line, but that may soon change. According to a new report from SamMobile, Samsung may change the status quo and launch a rectangular Galaxy Watch.

In fact, Samsung’s journey into smartwatches initially started with a rectangular design. In 2013, the company launched the Galaxy Gear smartwatch with a 1.6-inch rectangular display. The company then followed it up with the Gear 2 and Gear Live, which also maintained this form factor. However, in recent years, Samsung has shifted its focus to circular smartwatches and has refined the design over time.

Now, a new report from SamMobile suggests that Samsung’s smartwatches will soon return to a rectangular design. “ The idea is being actively considered internally, and it’s very likely that the switch will happen in practice ,” the SamMobile report says. However, it’s unclear whether this change will appear on the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 or later generations.

Technology experts say that making such an important change will certainly take time to optimize both hardware and software on the Galaxy Watch line.

While your personal preference may lean towards a circular design, rectangular displays on smartwatches also offer more practical benefits, compared to round displays.

Unlike circular displays that are often rounded at the edges, rectangular displays offer more usable screen space. That means you can see and interact with notifications better, and navigate user interface elements more easily on the device.

It will be interesting to see how Samsung implements it, and how it convinces customers to accept this form factor again, now that many users have become familiar with and increasingly fond of the circular design of the Galaxy Watch line. Meanwhile, Apple, perhaps Samsung’s main competitor in the wearables space, has found success with this form factor approach on its widely popular Apple Watch line.
