Philippines' rice output hits record high
The Marcos administration has stepped up agricultural support and expanded the area under unmilled rice harvest to boost the Philippines' record-high rice output in the first half of this year, the Department of Agriculture said on October 2.
According to data recently released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the country has achieved more than 9.077 million tons of unhusked rice (Paddy) production from January to June 2025, higher than the previous all-time high of 9.026 million tons in the same period in 2023 and 8.53 million tons last year.
The government 's efforts to ensure food security are now starting to pay off with production higher than the record in 2023, an agriculture ministry official said. This is partly due to efforts to mechanize and irrigate and distribute good quality seeds.
Specifically, 37,085 agricultural machines were distributed to 7,338 farmer groups, while 12,445 units of agricultural machinery and equipment were given to 6,869 farmer cooperatives and associations. A total of 88,646 hectares were irrigated under the Marcos administration's irrigation expansion program, benefiting 1.27 million farmers nationwide.
The government also provided fertilizer subsidies worth about 23 billion pesos to 5.66 million farmers, helping them boost local production. The all-time high yield was also due to increased harvested area and favorable weather conditions in the first half of 2025.
Data showed that the rice harvest area jumped to over 2.12 million hectares, higher than the 2.065 million hectares in the same period in 2024.
Farmers are “encouraged” by higher income despite higher production costs, as the average farmgate price of palay has increased to 23.48 pesos in 2024, up from 19.88 PHP in 2023.
Higher gross profit of P95,906/ha and net profit of P36,211/ha in 2024, compared to P82,914 and P26,423, respectively, in 2023. This translates to a higher net profit-to-cost ratio of P0.61/kg of palay compared to P0.47/kg in 2023.
With production in the first half of 2025, the Philippine Department of Agriculture can achieve a record high rice production target of 20.46 million tons/year.
