Philippines' rice production reaches record high.

The Philippine Department of Agriculture announced on October 2nd that the Marcos administration has increased agricultural support and expanded the area under harvest of unmilled rice to boost the Philippines' record-high rice production in the first half of this year.

According to recently released data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the country achieved a rice production of over 9.077 million tons from January to June 2025, exceeding the previous all-time high of 9.026 million tons in the same period of 2023 and 8.53 million tons last year.

Officials from the country's Ministry of Agriculture said the government 's efforts to ensure food security are beginning to yield results, with production exceeding the record levels of 2023. This is partly due to efforts to mechanize and improve irrigation and distribute high-quality seeds.

Specifically, 37,085 pieces of agricultural machinery were distributed to 7,338 farmer groups, while 12,445 units of agricultural machinery and equipment were given to 6,869 farmers' cooperatives and associations. A total of 88,646 hectares were irrigated under the Marcos government's irrigation expansion program, benefiting 1.27 million farmers nationwide.

The government also provided fertilizer subsidies worth approximately 23 billion pesos to 5.66 million farmers, helping them boost local production. The all-time high yields were also attributed to increased harvested area and favorable weather conditions in the first half of 2025.

Data shows that the harvested rice area has surged to over 2.12 million hectares, higher than the 2.065 million hectares recorded during the same period in 2024.

Farmers are "incentivized" by higher incomes despite higher production costs, as the average price of rice at the field has risen to 23.48 pesos in 2024, up from 19.88 PHP in 2023.

Gross profit was higher at 95,906 pesos/ha and net profit at 36,211 pesos/ha in 2024, compared to 82,914 pesos and 26,423 pesos respectively in 2023. Thus, the net profit margin on costs was higher at 0.61 pesos/kg of rice compared to 0.47 pesos/kg in 2023.

With production figures for the first half of 2025, the Philippine Department of Agriculture could achieve its record-high rice production target of 20.46 million tons per year.
