Rising star 'studying abroad' in Germany awaits his chance to shine on the Asian stage.

In April 2022, Mạnh Hưng and the Vietnam U.17 team went to Germany for training. After impressive performances in friendly matches, Bayern Munich legend Claudio Pizarro personally selected Mạnh Hưng and Hoàng Minh Tiến (currently playing for Kon Tum Club) to stay for intensive training for a week.

"I learned a lot about professionalism, footballing mindset, and control-based play here," Mạnh Hưng shared after his "study abroad" trip to Germany. It was a golden opportunity in his development, because Coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn's philosophy with the Vietnam U23 team is to control the ball and play beautiful attacking football.

The 2005-born center-back also earned the trust of coach Hoang Anh Tuan. At the 2023 AFC U-20 Championship finals, he was the only one of the three center-backs of the Vietnam U-20 team to play the full 270 minutes.

Manh Hung (born in 2005) quickly demonstrated his talent while playing for the Vietnam U.23 national team.

This is an impressive number considering our three opponents were the U.20 teams of Australia, Qatar, and Iran. In all three matches, the Vietnamese U.20 team was under immense pressure, but Mạnh Hưng always played maturely, confidently, and with decisive and intelligent ball handling.

At the 2023 Southeast Asian U.23 Championship, Mạnh Hưng continued to be trusted, playing in matches and helping the Vietnam U.23 team successfully defend their title in Thailand.

Manh Hung's progress has impressed coach Nguyen Anh Duc. The head coach of Binh Phuoc Club has loaned the central defender from The Cong Viettel team to play in the First Division. This season, Manh Hung has made 4 appearances (2 starts).

Over the past year, Manh Hung has made significant progress. This has earned him a place in the squad preparing for the 2024 U.23 Asian Championship. Notably, he is one of five additions made by coach Hoang Anh Tuan after he took over the Vietnam U.23 team.

Manh Hung and Minh Tien were retained for further training in Germany.

But to earn a place in the starting lineup in Qatar, Manh Hung will have to work even harder because coach Hoang Anh Tuan has many good central defenders. Even after the departure of Thanh Khai and Duc Anh, the Vietnam U23 team still has Luong Duy Cuong, Le Nguyen Hoang, Tran Quang Thinh, and Nguyen Ngoc Thang.

Except for Le Nguyen Hoang - a central defender born in the same year as Manh Hung (2005) - the remaining players are all older and have more experience playing at the highest level than the young talent of The Cong Viettel.

SEA Games 31 champion Luong Duy Cuong, who previously participated in the 2022 U.23 Asian Championship, is a key player for Da Nang FC, currently leading the First Division. Meanwhile, Nguyen Ngoc Thang also has extensive experience playing in the V-League.

After a standout 2022 season playing for Long An FC in the First Division, Ngoc Thang was brought to Ha Tinh FC by coach Nguyen Thanh Cong and has played 24 matches in the V-League. Meanwhile, Quang Thinh was a key player for the People's Police FC, which won the 2022 First Division championship, and has since played for both Hanoi Police FC and LPBank HAGL.

The competition for one of the three starting center-back spots in the Vietnam U23 team is not an easy battle. But after his impressive performance at the 2023 ASIAD in Hangzhou (China), it's clear that Manh Hung has a real chance to play and prove himself.
