An additional 4,000 hectares of FSC-certified forest will be developed.

Cam Lo District recently held a meeting with the National Timber Company Limited - Quang Tri Branch regarding the establishment of FSC-certified plantation forests.

During the meeting, the National Wood Company Limited - Quang Tri Branch stated that it is currently constructing a wood pellet processing plant in Dong Ha City with an area of ​​2 hectares and a capacity of 5,000 tons/month. The plant requires 11,000 tons/month of raw materials from wood, branches, bark, and by-products from planted forests. Operation is expected in August 2024. The company has signed preliminary agreements with two partners in Japan, requiring the products to have FSC certification.

With the factory's annual raw material needs of approximately 132,000 tons, and stemming from its forest management and protection responsibilities and the requirements of its client partners, the company aims to develop an FSC-certified raw material area in Cam Lo district covering approximately 4,000 hectares. Currently, the company has also signed a contract with the Center for Research and Resource Management to support the development of FSC certification documentation for a collaborative partnership between the company and a group of forest-owning households.

During the FSC certification process, the company will cover all costs for technical training, support in building and reviewing documentation to ensure eligibility for certification assessment; cover all costs for inviting international organizations to assess and issue certification; establish a framework agreement between the company and households/groups of households clearly outlining the benefit-sharing mechanism between both parties upon achieving and maintaining certification; and commit to purchasing timber from certified households/groups of households at a price higher than the market price at the time of purchase or providing seedlings for reforestation.

The leaders of Cam Lo district agreed with the plans and policies proposed by the National Timber Company Limited - Quang Tri Branch. They also directed relevant departments, communes, and towns to coordinate with the enterprise to disseminate information to forest owners participating in the FSC forest certification group; and to guide and support the enterprise and consulting unit on the legal process and related procedures during the certification process. The goal is to begin issuing certificates to participating forest owners by March 2025.
