The difference in class
On the evening of May 1st, young talent Arthur Fils was unable to spring a surprise against world number 1 Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open 2026, officially ending his streak of 9 consecutive wins.

Entering the match, Sinner quickly demonstrated his superior class. His precise shots and control of the tempo allowed the Italian player to constantly put his opponent in a difficult position. Under immense pressure from the world number one, Fils' unstable mentality led to frequent errors, giving Sinner the opportunity to win the first set overwhelmingly 6-2.
In the second set, the French player gradually improved his game. However, Sinner's tactic of attacking from the baseline, which is his forte, proved completely wrong against Fils. The talented player born in 2004 at one point led 3-2 but still allowed the world number one to break his serve and take a 5-4 lead. In the final game, Sinner served accurately, finishing the set with a 6-4 score and securing a 2-0 victory.
With this result, Sinner surpassed Novak Djokovic to become the youngest player to reach the final of all nine Masters 1000 tournaments.
At the same time, he is also the first player born in the 2000s to reach 350 wins at the ATP Tour level.
The first person to win 5 Masters 1000 titles.
In the other semi-final, Alexander Zverev showed his mettle by overcoming the 21-year-old sensation Alexander Blockx. The German representative started well (6-2) but had to endure a challenging second set before securing a 7-5 victory. This marks Zverev's fourth appearance in the final in Madrid, a tournament he previously won in 2018 and 2021.

With world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz having withdrawn from the 2026 Madrid Open due to injury, the upcoming final in Spain (May 3-5) will be a high-stakes showdown between two top players, Sinner (ranked 1st) and Zverev (ranked 3rd), marking their fifth consecutive encounter at the Masters 1000 level.
Zverev is certainly eager to end his Italian opponent's 22-match winning streak on all surfaces and reclaim his glory in his familiar arena. However, the world number one has won all eight of their most recent encounters.
If Sinner defeats Zverev in Madrid, he will surpass Rafael Nadal to become the first person to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles.
