Many sections of rural roads in Bac Lieu province have subsided and remain unrepaired, causing difficulties for local residents' travel.
Nearly a year after subsidence occurred due to drought and saltwater intrusion at the beginning of the 2024 dry season, many rural roads in Hong Dan and Dong Hai districts (Bac Lieu province) have still not been repaired.
People in these areas still have to travel on temporary roads and wooden bridges, which do not guarantee traffic safety.
A section of road in Ninh Quoi A commune, Hong Dan district, has collapsed and has not been repaired in a timely manner, causing difficulties for local residents' travel.
People are still hoping that the roads will be repaired soon, creating convenient conditions for travel and trade, and especially ensuring the safety of students going to school.
Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh (residing in Ninh Chai hamlet, Ninh Quoi A commune, Hong Dan district) stated that the concrete road near his house was constructed about a year ago. In May 2024, this road experienced serious subsidence, disrupting traffic.
"Currently, people who want to transport goods have to use small boats because large vehicles can't pass through. It's unsafe for schoolchildren to travel, especially through the landslide-affected section. I sincerely hope that the authorities will soon repair the road to ensure convenient traffic," Mr. Khanh added.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (residing in Ninh Tien hamlet, Ninh Quoi A commune) shared that immediately after the subsidence occurred, his family lent the land in front of their house so that people in the hamlet could temporarily use it for transportation.
"It's been almost a year, and we haven't seen any authorities repair the damaged road. Currently, people have great difficulty getting around; when it rains, it becomes muddy and slippery, making it very dangerous to fall," Mr. Hung said.
Similarly, a 2.5m wide, approximately 30m long section of rural road on the Vinh Dien - Lap Dien route, Vinh Dien hamlet, Long Dien Tay commune, Dong Hai district, unexpectedly collapsed at the end of July 2024. To date, this collapsed section has not been repaired, forcing residents to take a very inconvenient detour.
Students crossing the old, temporary wooden bridge to go to school are in a very dangerous situation, posing a high risk of traffic accidents.
Speaking with a reporter from Giao Thong Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Chien, Vice Chairman of the Hong Dan District People's Committee, said that immediately after the land subsidence occurred, the District People's Committee reported and proposed to the relevant provincial agencies to promptly submit a request to the Provincial People's Committee for consideration of funding support for the district to address the issue and stabilize the lives of people in the affected area.
"To date, the district has been allocated funds and will soon begin addressing the affected areas as quickly as possible. It is expected that repairs will begin in the first quarter of 2025," Mr. Chien said.
"To repair the damage and ensure traffic flow through the subsidence and landslide area, the district has also included it in its public investment plan to allocate funds, with remediation expected to begin in early 2025," said Mr. Ho Thanh Tuan, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Dong Hai District.
