During a recent symposium titled "Looking back at the journey of Cai Luong theater from 1975 to the present," organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, artists and writers in Ho Chi Minh City expressed concerns about copyright in the digital environment.
People's Artist Thoại Miêu stated: "The digital environment opens up many opportunities for creating, preserving, and exploiting works and products, but it also poses many challenges for both content creators and management agencies, especially regarding copyright enforcement. What is worrying is the increasing rate of copyright infringement in the digital environment."
Songwriter Hoang Song Viet expressed his frustration: "Even with my own compositions, if someone quickly registers and appropriates my copyright, I lose everything."
At the international conference on copyright enforcement in the digital environment, organized by the Copyright Office (under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea from June 17 to 21, with the participation of delegates and representatives from 15 countries around the world and international experts, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ho An Phong emphasized: "Vietnam is focusing on developing cultural industries with strong national identity. Therefore, close cooperation, coordination, and timely sharing are needed to protect copyright for each digital content product."
Experts believe that Vietnam has the advantage of having officially become a member of the Copyright Treaty and the Treaty on Performances and Phonograms since 2022. This fulfills commitments in new-generation free trade agreements, as well as creating an effective legal foundation for protecting works and copyrights transparently and effectively, especially in the digital environment.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai stated that in Vietnam's strategy for developing cultural industries until 2030, copyright issues make a significant contribution to the domestic economy . Copyright infringement in the digital age mainly manifests in two ways: operators of illegal websites and illegal users.
"Why can't we stop websites that steal the intellectual property of artists and writers? Is it because the application of modern digital technology makes it difficult to block and monitor illegal websites? Therefore, international cooperation is needed to prevent this consequence," suggested Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai.
Meritorious Artist Ca Lê Hồng proposed fundamental solutions for copyright enforcement: "It is necessary to have a plan to review and improve the legal system soon; promote the dissemination of legal regulations; strengthen the capacity of management agencies, invest in infrastructure, and apply information technology; and establish collective representation organizations for copyright and related rights…".
According to experts, it is crucial to identify trends in policy development and technological solutions to address copyright and related rights infringements in the digital environment.
"Ho Chi Minh City is a major cultural center of the country, therefore it is necessary to implement many cooperation programs in the management and enforcement of copyright in the digital environment in Ho Chi Minh City," said Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong.
Insiders have also expressed concerns about the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), which will pose a challenge to copyright issues.
