(BDO) Lacquerware products awarded OCOP "stars" not only present a new business opportunity but also open up a new direction for the products, contributing to increasing the quality and value of the Tuong Binh Hiep lacquerware craft. In particular, Dinh Hoa Lacquerware Co., Ltd. (Tuong Binh Hiep Ward, Thu Dau Mot City) has 20 lacquerware products, including vases, plates, boxes, trays, and paintings, that have just been recognized by the Thu Dau Mot City People's Committee as achieving 3-star OCOP standards.

"Support" from the OCOP program

The focus of the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program is the development of agricultural, non-agricultural, and service products with advantages in each locality along the value chain, with private and collective economic entities playing the main role, implemented in the direction of developing internal strengths and increasing value.

Dinh Hoa lacquerware products meet consumer needs and have established their brand not only through reputation and quality but also through the skillful hands and creativity of talented artisans.

Binh Duong 's advantage in implementing the OCOP program is that most of its key products have already been registered by local authorities as potential products to participate in the OCOP program.

The successful implementation of the OCOP program is an essential direction, contributing to promoting the shift in rural labor structure, utilizing human resources, protecting the environment, and preserving and developing the socio-economic conditions of rural areas in the province in a sustainable manner.

To ensure a stable market for OCOP products, local authorities, along with businesses, production and trading units, and people in the area, have been actively coordinating to build product brands and create new opportunities for the development of OCOP products.

To date, the province has 219 OCOP products achieving 3-star to 4-star ratings; including 12 4-star products and 207 3-star products from businesses, cooperatives, farms, production groups, and household businesses.

The Tuong Binh Hiep lacquer village in Thu Dau Mot City has a long-standing reputation. In the 1980s and 1990s, lacquer paintings and handicrafts from this village were exported to many countries such as the US, EU, Japan, and South Korea.

Over the past 20 years, the export of lacquerware products from Tuong Binh Hiep village has slowed down. While in 2001 the village had 1,840 households involved in production, employing 3,860 workers, today only about 90 establishments remain.

In order to preserve and promote the traditional values of the lacquerware craft in Tuong Binh Hiep, in 2020, the Provincial People's Committee approved the project "Preservation and development of the Tuong Binh Hiep lacquerware craft village combined with tourism in Thu Dau Mot City" and assigned the Thu Dau Mot City People's Committee to implement it.

The project aims to comprehensively develop the craft village, plan and build a concentrated production area for lacquerware businesses to ensure environmental protection, and create a common product display area for the craft village. It also combines this with the development of tourism tours to introduce the craft village's products to domestic and international tourists, and creates opportunities for artisans and skilled craftsmen to pass on their skills and teach the younger generation.

To date, the project has approved the 1/500 scale planning and will proceed with the next steps in the near future. Along with the project to preserve and develop the lacquerware craft village, especially with the added support from the OCOP program, it is expected to "revive" the lacquerware craft village, which was once renowned both domestically and internationally.

Adapt to the trend

Recently, many products from this craft village have been recognized as meeting OCOP standards. Mr. Truong Hoan Nguyen, Director of Dinh Hoa Lacquerware Co., Ltd. (Tuong Binh Hiep Ward, Thu Dau Mot City), said: the company has 20 lacquerware products that have just been recognized by the Thu Dau Mot City People's Committee as achieving 3-star OCOP standards. Lacquerware products with OCOP "stars" not only represent a new business opportunity but also open up a new direction for the products.

By participating in the OCOP program, Tuong Binh Hiep lacquerware products gain access to a wider market. The craft village will receive guidance on production processes and origins, and have the opportunity to access official distribution channels and export markets. This will contribute to increasing the quality and value of Tuong Binh Hiep lacquerware, while also creating stable and sustainable income for the craft village community.

Having gone through many stages of development, Tuong Binh Hiep lacquerware is now undergoing a strong transformation in the process of international economic integration. In recent years, consumers have favored handcrafted products that are both decorative and functional.

Mr. Nguyen said that Dinh Hoa lacquerware products have met consumer needs and established their brand not only through reputation and quality but also through the skillful hands and creativity of talented artisans. Currently, Dinh Hoa lacquerware products mainly serve as domestic gifts, such as trays, boxes, vases, paintings, etc.

Mr. Nguyen shared that with the socio-economic development following new trends, the products of traditional craft villages are subject to certain influences. He is concerned about finding ways to prevent the local traditional craft from fading away. As a first step, he is transforming the technology, creating lacquerware gift products with novel designs and styles to attract customers.

He also boldly collaborated with local travel companies and schools to organize tours and experiential programs. Hopefully, this new business model will contribute to opening up new avenues for business development and help preserve and promote the values of the traditional craft village.
