“The Ma people in Cat Tien 3 commune are very skilled in weaving! Just looking at the woven products of the local people is enough to know that their craftsmanship has reached a sophisticated level,” said Mr. Nguyen Dang Hai, a tourist from Khanh Hoa province attending the first Ma ethnic folk culture and sports festival in Cat Tien 3 commune in 2026, enthusiastically. According to Mr. Hai, because he loves the Ma people's woven handicrafts, he has devoted much effort and time to learning about the items they use in their daily lives and in their rituals.
“The weaving products of the Ma people are not simply about technique (the Ma people often use single-strand, double-strand, and triple-strand weaving techniques to weave items for daily life, production, and rituals. In addition, the Ma people have also created additional weaving techniques in geometric shapes such as squares, rhombuses, and hexagons... In some items, the Ma people combine weaving and wrapping techniques), but also about art (the Ma people express their aesthetic sense through the shapes, patterns, and motifs...), and contain cultural depth (while weaving items, the Ma people convey their wishes for happiness and personal passions to the community, as well as to the deities...),” Mr. Hai said.
Artisan Dieu K'It said that the Ma people's woven products are quite diverse, ranging from containers for rice, seeds, etc., to items for transporting salt, firewood, and produce; from items for going to the market to items used in rituals; from chicken carriers to fishing nets. Based on the intended use, the Ma people employ different weaving techniques to create products with the desired function. According to Mr. Dieu K'Vien from Cat Tien 3 commune, the weaving technique is not difficult. However, it requires a high degree of perseverance. "A Ma woven product, from the time the artisan goes into the forest to find raw materials until the product is completed, takes from 15 days to 3 months, depending on the difficulty and intricacy of the product. Even if the weaving materials are readily available at home, it still takes at least 3-5 days to complete the product," Mr. Dieu K'Vien said. Artisan Dieu K'It added that a beautiful woven product depends heavily on the weaver's skill. It requires the weaver to have extensive experience in sourcing raw materials, as well as expertise in splitting and shaping the strips so that there are no gaps during weaving, resulting in a tightly woven and aesthetically pleasing product. To achieve this, the weaver must be truly patient, meticulous, and possess very skillful hands.
According to Ms. Ka G'Giang, a collector of Ma ethnic woven products, a small Ma basket currently costs between 300,000 and 400,000 VND. Medium-sized baskets cost between 800,000 and 1.2 million VND, while special-sized baskets can cost up to 2 million VND. Mr. Tran Quang Truong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Cat Tien 3 commune, stated that the locality considers preserving the traditional weaving craft of the Ma people in conjunction with community tourism development as an important direction in preserving the traditional cultural values of the Ma people. At the first Cat Tien 3 commune Ma ethnic folk culture and sports festival in 2026, many vibrant cultural and sports activities took place, including a weaving competition. This is not only an activity for the Ma people to preserve their weaving craft, but also an opportunity for the locality to enhance promotion and find markets for the Ma people's handicrafts.
