Exporting military and defense technology is not simply a matter of economic and commercial benefit for Japan, but primarily serves Tokyo's long-standing strategic goal of building and strengthening its role and influence, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.
In many respects, Japan and Australia are truly ideal partners, sharing the same dreams and aspirations. The new agreement helps Japan and Australia strengthen what they call the "axis of partnership" within the network of bilateral and multilateral ties and alliances they have built in military, defense, and security matters with partners and allies in and outside the Indo-Pacific region.
For Australia, this Japanese warship is an excellent addition to the trilateral security alliance between the US, UK, and Australia (AUKUS). With this addition, Japan can also establish a foothold both inside and outside AUKUS through Australia.
