Fake milk, fake medicine: Unpredictable danger

Counterfeit goods surround people's health

According to the Investigation Police Agency - Ministry of Public Security , from August 2021 to present, Rance Pharma International Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company and Hacofood Group Nutrition Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company have produced 573 brands of various types of powdered milk, including milk for people with diabetes, kidney failure, premature babies, pregnant women and sold through e-commerce channels, small retail stores and social networks.

Authorities strengthen inspection and control of commodity markets in the province.

These products are advertised as meeting international quality standards, including ingredients such as bird's nest extract, cordyceps, macadamia powder, walnut powder... and are widely sold in many localities. However, according to the authorities, the milk does not contain these substances at all. Notably, in the list of fake milk announced by the authorities, there is the Hofumil Gold Plus milk product that Hospital 108 has advised patients to use.

Mr. Tran Bao Chung, Phu Thinh commune (Yen Son) expressed his concern when hearing about the fake milk case: “In the past 2 years, my child has drunk about 30 cans of Mifamilk colostrum 24 milk bought at a store in Tuyen Quang city. When I checked again, I suspected that this was one of the products related to the fake milk case that is being investigated. The store has now stopped selling this type of milk, and the store owner confirmed that it is part of the ecosystem of the company that produces fake milk. Knowing that my child may have drunk fake milk, I am very heartbroken. I hope that the authorities will tighten the inspection to protect consumers.”

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lanh, over 80 years old, is being treated for diabetes, shared: “I usually use milk specifically for patients, but now that I hear there are fake products, I am very worried. I hope the authorities will increase inspections so that people can feel secure using genuine products.”

Not only milk, a large-scale case of manufacturing and consuming fake drugs has just been jointly dismantled by Thanh Hoa Provincial Police. The ringleader is Nguyen Tien Dat, born in 1991, who ran a counterfeiting ring of up to 21 types of drugs, including preventive and curative drugs, with tens of thousands of products. According to information from specialized agencies, these fake drugs may not contain active ingredients for treatment, or contain other substances that are harmful to health if used for a long time.

According to the owner of Huyen Kieu pharmacy, group 14, Tan Ha ward (Tuyen Quang city), for decades of selling medicine, the store has always imported medicine from reputable pharmaceutical companies. The store does not import any strangers who come to offer to buy medicine or functional products of unknown origin. People should go to reputable pharmacies, carefully check the origin and expiry date of the medicine before buying, and absolutely should not buy cheap, floating goods of unknown origin.

Mifamilk colostrum 24 milk is on the list of fake milk announced by authorities and was purchased by Mr. Tran Bao Chung's family in Phu Thinh commune (Yen Son).

Dr. Nguyen Thi Bach Tuyet, Head of the Department of Nutrition (CDC Tuyen Quang) warned: Using fake, poor quality milk can cause serious consequences, especially for pregnant women, young children and sick people. Children can suffer from malnutrition, digestive disorders, and slow development; Particularly for people with kidney failure, if they use unsuitable milk, or the wrong type of protein, it can make the condition worse. Doctors recommend that people choose products with clear origins and that have been tested to ensure their health.

Authorities recommend that people should buy products at reputable pharmacies, supermarkets, and distribution stores; carefully check product information such as barcodes, production dates, and expiration dates; do not trust products advertised as “miraculous” on social networks; and consult a doctor before using functional products or specialized milk.

Speaking to reporters, a representative of the Market Management Department of Tuyen Quang province said: "Currently, through inspection, the functional forces in Tuyen Quang have not discovered any fake milk powder products or fake drugs circulating in the area. However, we are continuing to strengthen coordination with professional units, inspect and supervise the establishments distributing and trading these products."
