Youthful energy from the Green Summer program.

Over the course of the 2025 Green Summer Campaign in Phu Mo and Xuan Lanh communes, more than 40 volunteer students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education not only helped people in remote areas and ethnic minority communities access digital technology but also left their mark with projects such as "Lighting up rural roads".

Previously, after sunset, the inter-village roads of Phu Mo commune were almost completely dark. Travel was difficult for residents, especially the elderly and children. But now, thanks to the youth volunteer project "Lighting Up the Countryside Roads," which installed 20 solar-powered streetlights, the roads in the villages are brightly lit every night. Ms. Le Thi Hong, a resident of Ky Lo village, couldn't hide her joy: "Since the lights came on, the roads are bright, and we feel safer going anywhere. The children don't have to worry about coming home late from school anymore. Everyone in the village is very happy."

Local authorities highly appreciate the practical significance of the project. According to Mr. La Lan Don, Secretary of the Phu Tien village Party branch (Phu Mo commune), the installation of the lighting system helps ensure security and order at night, improving the quality of life for people, especially ethnic minorities. This "Lighting up the Countryside" project is a vivid testament to the pioneering and voluntary role of young people in contributing to the construction of new rural areas.

Children in Phu Mo commune now have a place to play thanks to the "Children's Playground" project built by students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education.

Similarly, Xuan Lanh commune recently received the "Lighting Up Rural Roads" project with 40 solar-powered streetlights. Mr. Tran Quoc Huy, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Xuan Lanh commune, said: "Previously, people here had great difficulty getting around, especially during the rainy season or on moonless nights. Now, with the lights, the village is brighter, and people feel closer. We thank the students for bringing light to this land."

Under the scorching summer sun of the mountainous region, young volunteers diligently measured, pulled wires, installed poles, and placed batteries. Undeterred by the difficulties, these students brought not only equipment but also the spirit of dedication of youth. Pham Ngoc Quy, President of the Student Union of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, said: Ho Chi Minh, Deputy Commander of the school's 2025 Green Summer Campaign, said: “To achieve these impactful projects, we went through many challenging times together. There were scorching summer afternoons, our green uniforms drenched in sweat as we dug lamp holes and mixed cement. There were sudden downpours that forced us to halt our work. There was initial awkwardness as our hands, accustomed to holding pens and keyboards, now had to wield hoes and trowels—clumsy but determined. And there were sleepless nights because we missed home. But when we saw the villagers happy, we forgot all our fatigue. Only by going out and doing it did we realize that small things like installing lamps can create big changes for the community.”

The "Lighting Up Rural Roads" project is not only part of the Green Summer Campaign, but also demonstrates the pioneering and volunteer role of young people in building new rural areas. Each lit light bulb represents hope and is a testament to the selfless dedication of the youth.

According to student Nguyen Phu Thanh, Phu Mo, and Xuan Lanh, the team taught students who previously only knew the lecture halls and books invaluable lessons. These were lessons about sharing, community spirit, the value of labor, and the idea that "giving is receiving." The team members learned to overcome their own egos, to love and connect with people who were initially strangers, eventually becoming a family. They arrived with youthful energy and left with hearts full of humanity and maturity.

Besides the meaningful lighting project, the Summer Green Volunteer Student Team of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education also opened "Children's Classrooms," organized "Creative Festivals," inaugurated "Children's Playgrounds" and "National Flag Routes," and "Cooked meals for children in mountainous areas"... These are not only projects worth tens of millions of dong, but also messages and the most sincere feelings that the students want to leave behind for future generations.

The "Lighting Up Rural Roads" project was inaugurated in Xuan Lanh commune.

In particular, every day, the volunteer team actively participates in supporting the commune's public administrative area, contributing to resolving administrative procedures, improving work efficiency and reducing the workload for local officials, bringing more convenience to the people; supporting units in the digital transformation process, helping people install essential applications. Along with the "Digital Literacy Program," students also train commune officials in AI knowledge and implement the "Cashless Market" model, contributing to the modernization of life for the people here.

Associate Professor, Dr. Chau Dinh Thanh, Vice Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, shared: “These small projects today will be significant memories in the journey of growth for young people. Through this activity, students not only hone practical skills but also gain a better understanding of civic responsibility and patriotism from the simplest things.”
