Newly promoted Premier League team surpasses reigning champions Liverpool in terms of actual transfer spending in the summer of 2025, creating a remarkable phenomenon in English football.

Sunderland have officially announced the signing of left-back Arthur Masuaku, marking the club's 10th signing of the 2025 summer transfer window. The 31-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Stadium of Light club, with a transfer fee of €6 million.

The arrival of Masuaku has propelled Sunderland past the €145.5 million mark this summer, placing them fifth on the list of Premier League teams with the biggest spending sprees, behind Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool.

However, if you calculate the actual spending (money spent on players minus money spent on player sales), Sunderland actually spent more than Liverpool (101 million euros) or Tottenham (110 million euros). The "Black Cats'" spending is only behind MU, Arsenal, and Man City.

Sunderland, under manager Regis Le Bris, capitalized on the strong financial resources from their return to the Premier League to build a competitive squad. Breaking the transfer record with the Habib Diarra deal (£30 million) and signing big names like Granit Xhaka and Simon Adingra showed that the "Black Cats" are not just aiming for survival but also want to make a bigger impact next season.
