On the morning of January 30th, the first Congress of the Ho Chi Minh City Taekwondo Federation (HTF) for the term (2026 - 2031) was held at Ton Duc Thang University.

This is a congress to consolidate and transform the scale of operations following the merger of administrative units from the former Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong , and Ba Ria - Vung Tau.

Ho Chi Minh City Taekwondo has absolutely dominated the National Championships, winning the overall first place consecutively from 2023 to 2025. Ho Chi Minh City athletes also made the main contribution to Vietnam's taekwondo gold medals at the 32nd and 33rd SEA Games.

Meanwhile, Binh Duong taekwondo ranked second overall from 2023 to 2025. Its achievements in international competitions are also very impressive, with 1 gold medal at the 2024 Asian Police Taekwondo Championship, 1 gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games (Nguyen Hong Trong), and 4 gold medals at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games.

The taekwondo movement in Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau is also very developed. Binh Duong has nearly 4,000 practitioners who train regularly. Meanwhile, Ba Ria - Vung Tau has seen an impressive surge in the number of new members.

Therefore, the merger of the taekwondo movements of the three localities is expected to further help Ho Chi Minh City taekwondo solidify its number one position and create new values for Ho Chi Minh City sports in the era of integration.

The first term congress (2026-2031) elected 17 members to the executive committee and 9 members to the standing committee.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, was re-elected as Chairman of the HTF. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Huy, Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation (VTF), was elected as Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the HTF.

The key objective of the new HTF term is to contribute 40% of its personnel to the Vietnamese taekwondo team, striving to have athletes win medals at the 2026 Asian Games and qualify for the 2028 Olympics.

HTF also aims to increase revenue from social contributions to reach 70-80% of its total operating budget by 2030. In addition, HTF will proactively develop plans and be ready to host national and international tournaments when it has sufficient facilities, human resources, and social funding.

Speaking at the congress, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, Nguyen Nam Nhan, shared that this is a historic term for HTF after the merger.

He said, "I hope this is not just a mechanical merger, but a strategic synergy of resources from the three key taekwondo centers in the South, helping Ho Chi Minh City taekwondo to restructure more strongly. Ho Chi Minh City hasn't hosted a major international taekwondo tournament in a long time, so I hope to see one in the future."
