Accordingly, the Department of Transport requested the People's Committee of Thu Duc City and districts such as District 7, 12, Binh Thanh, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi, Nha Be, Binh Chanh and Can Gio to direct functional forces to strengthen inspection and strictly handle cases of illegal construction within the protection corridor on river banks, canals and ditches under their management.
At the same time, the above localities are required to direct wards, communes, towns, and affiliated units to actively mobilize people and businesses to dismantle or force the demolition (enforcement) of illegal and encroaching construction works within the protection corridor on river banks, canals, and ditches under their management.
The Department of Transport also requested the Department of Construction to direct the local Construction Inspectorate to strengthen inspection and coordinate with the People's Committees of districts, towns, and Thu Duc City to resolutely handle cases of illegal encroachment and construction within the protection corridor on river banks, canals, and ditches in the area.
In addition, the Department of Transport assigned the Department Inspectorate, the Waterway Management Center to coordinate with functional units of the Department of Construction, People's Committees of districts and Thu Duc City to regularly inspect and handle the above case.
According to statistics from the Waterway Management Center on violations of onshore protection corridors and encroachment on rivers, canals and ditches in Ho Chi Minh City, hundreds of encroachment cases were discovered and punished by authorities.
Specifically, up to now, the total number of cases of construction works, encroachment and violations of the protection corridor of river banks, canals and ditches in Ho Chi Minh City is 108 cases.

Regarding this issue, in the period of 2023 - 2024, Ho Chi Minh City also set up protection corridor markers for 59 rivers, canals and streams with a total length of more than 553km.
Of which, the Saigon River will be marked along a length of nearly 72km, from Binh Phuoc Bridge (Thu Duc City) to the border of Tay Ninh province.
In addition, some other rivers and canals are also marked such as: Soai Rap nearly 60km long; Long Tau river 32km long and more than 7km Dong Nai river; Tom canal, Cay Kho canal, Ba Lon canal...
According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the deployment of markers aims to ensure safety and stability of river banks and canals. At the same time, it ensures the lives and property of people living along rivers and canals when many areas are at risk of landslides, especially during the rainy season.
