Enter the fray aggressively.
5G is gradually becoming an essential infrastructure in urban life in Hue. According to the Department of Science and Technology, to date, 352 5G BTS stations have been put into operation in the city, of which Viettel accounts for 324 stations, VNPT 18 stations, and Mobifone 10 stations. Viettel alone has 5G coverage in all 40 communes and wards of the city, making Hue one of the first localities in the Central and Central Highlands regions to achieve 5G coverage.
The development of 5G in Hue is part of the city's overall science and technology and digital transformation strategies, linked to important plans such as the Hue City Party Committee's Plan 295-KH/TU, the Politburo 's Plan 208/KH-UBND implementing Resolution 57-NQ/TW, and the Digital Infrastructure Strategy to 2025, with a vision to 2030. Accordingly, Hue aims for 60% 5G coverage by 2025, reaching 80% by 2026, and 100% coverage in concentrated information technology zones, industrial parks, train stations, seaports, and international airports. This is considered a "mandatory" condition for the city to accelerate the implementation of digital government, digital economy, and digital society.
Mr. Nguyen Huy Quang, Director of Viettel Hue City, informed: In 2025 alone, the unit installed an additional 200 5G base stations, bringing the total number to nearly 330. “Outdoor coverage currently reaches about 90%, and indoor coverage about 70%. Viettel Hue has completed the targets set in Resolution 57 of the Politburo and the plan of the City People's Committee, finishing one month ahead of schedule,” Mr. Quang said.
According to Mr. Quang, 5G speeds are 10 times faster than 4G, with very low latency, creating a foundation for digital transformation applications in urban management, education, healthcare, tourism, and manufacturing and business. To date, Viettel Hue has nearly 100,000 customers using 5G services, a threefold increase compared to 2024, demonstrating the high level of readiness and acceptance of new technology among the people.
Not to be left behind, VNPT Hue is also gradually expanding its coverage. Mr. Pham Ngoc Hiep, Deputy Director of VNPT Hue, said that in recent times, VNPT has focused on investing in 5G base stations in densely populated areas and the city center, while also preparing to expand to other wards and communes and areas serving local government activities.
“The development of 5G must harmonize the interests of the people, the government, and businesses. VNPT is calculating investment options that both support digital transformation and ensure efficiency, recovering capital for reinvestment in infrastructure expansion,” Mr. Hiep shared.

Aiming for over 500 new 5G base stations.
According to the plan, Hue will continue to install 502 new 5G BTS stations in 2026, including 200 stations by Viettel, 26 by VNPT, and 276 by MobiFone. The goal is to eliminate coverage gaps and improve indoor coverage quality, especially in residential areas, tourist areas, and historical sites.
The implementation also presented numerous challenges. Heavy rains and landslides in October and November 2025 made transporting and installing equipment very difficult. However, according to Mr. Nguyen Huy Quang, Viettel Hue overcame the weather and storms to ensure the project's progress and uphold its commitment to the city.
A notable point is the deployment of user-friendly BTS stations, integrating both 4G and 5G, suitable for the historical sites and urban landscape of Hue. As a result, many heritage sites and tourist areas that were previously difficult to access now have coverage, contributing to an enhanced visitor experience and effectively promoting the image of Hue.

Hue City identifies digital infrastructure as the foundation of digital transformation. According to Nguyen Xuan Son, Director of the Department of Science and Technology, with widespread 5G coverage, applications such as smart tourism, smart cities, online public services, digital education, and the night-time economy will have a "runway" for Hue to accelerate its growth in the digital space.
