Farmers in Loc Ha ( Ha Tinh province ) are delighted with the continuous golden harvests in their rice fields, along with many positive signs appearing in the food crops of this rural area.
Farmers in Thuong Phu village (Hong Loc commune) are applying fertilizer to their summer-autumn rice crop during the tillering stage.
Hong Loc commune completed the summer-autumn planting season more than 10 days ago. Currently, farmers are focusing on bringing water into the fields to combat drought. The entire commune planted 470 hectares (20 hectares more than last year's summer-autumn crop), but thanks to the large plots of land, all stages, from plowing and harrowing to planting, only took about two weeks, reducing the time by one-third compared to before. The plowing and harrowing process has also been 100% mechanized, with the cost of renting machinery being 40,000-60,000 VND/sao cheaper than in previous seasons.
According to Le Viet Binh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hong Loc commune: “In recent years, our rice fields have undergone many breakthrough changes, with the cultivated area continuously increasing, the number of plots decreasing (from 4-5 plots/household to only 1 plot/household), the internal field road system and irrigation canals being invested in synchronously, new high-yield varieties being introduced, and science and technology being applied to production. As a result, the rice yield in the spring crop was 60 quintals/hectare. This year's summer-autumn crop, the commune aims to achieve 50 quintals/hectare, about 2.8-3 quintals/hectare higher than previous summer-autumn crops.”
Farmers in Ich Hau commune are combining weeding and building embankments to retain water in their rice fields during the summer-autumn crop season.
Also one of the "rice granaries" of Loc Ha district, Ich Hau commune has always been a shining example of production by adhering to seasonal schedules, adapting to weather conditions, and ensuring high yields. Currently, farmers in Ich Hau are rushing to irrigate, fertilize, and care for their fields, proactively checking for diseases and rodent damage, dredging irrigation canals, and building internal field roads..., striving to harvest before September 10th to avoid flooding and ensure a successful harvest.
According to Bui Trong Dinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ich Hau commune: "For many years, we have focused on directing the planting of rice in full area, along with implementing a comprehensive set of measures, solutions, and production techniques to increase productivity and output. This year's summer-autumn crop alone covers 485 hectares of rice (accounting for 99% of the summer-autumn crop area and 4 hectares more than last year), striving to achieve a yield of 58 quintals/hectare (2 quintals/hectare higher than last year's summer-autumn crop), with an estimated output of 2,813 tons (120 tons higher than this crop last year)."
In 2023, Loc Ha district cultivated 2,628 hectares of summer-autumn rice and has basically completed planting. According to statistics, the cultivated area this season is 55 hectares more than the 2022 summer-autumn crop, 129 hectares more than the 2021 summer-autumn crop, and 1,279 hectares more than 10 years ago. Not only the summer-autumn crop, but the total cultivated rice area this year (spring, summer-autumn, and main crop) also increased by more than 100 hectares compared to last year and about 319 hectares compared to 2021.
Along with the increase in cultivated area, in recent years, Loc Ha rice fields have also shown significant changes in rice varieties. Accordingly, the number of varieties has been selected and reduced, focusing on high-yielding, high-quality varieties suitable for the soil conditions for mass production, such as: DQ 11, ADI 168, QP 5, LP 5, TH 3-3, TH 3-5, ADI168... Currently, the proportion of high-quality rice varieties in the area is estimated at nearly 70% (a 50% increase compared to 10 years ago), making a significant contribution to increasing productivity and output.
Farmers in Tan Trung village (Tan Loc commune) are spraying pesticides to kill leaf-rolling caterpillars and protect their summer-autumn rice crop.
Furthermore, mechanization has been widely implemented in Loc Ha's fields to reduce labor, ensure timely planting, and improve production efficiency. Loc Ha currently has 25 combine harvesters, hundreds of hand-held harvesters, 50 large-capacity tillage machines, and 161 tillage machines with a capacity of less than 23 horsepower.
The mechanization rate in land preparation and rice harvesting in Loc Ha reached 97-98%; with many localities performing well, such as Hong Loc (2 combine harvesters, 21 various types of land preparation machines), Ich Hau (4 combine harvesters, 12 land preparation machines), Thach My (7 combine harvesters, 8 land preparation machines)...
According to Nguyen Van An, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Loc Ha District: "In line with the spirit of the Resolution of the 4th District Party Congress, we are focusing on restructuring the agricultural sector towards modernization, organic farming, and circular agriculture to create a breakthrough in production; in which, rice cultivation is the focus."
In the coming period, Loc Ha will focus on land consolidation to reach approximately 1,610 hectares by 2025; actively test and select short-day, high-yield, and high-quality rice varieties; innovate production organization, build concentrated rice production areas in an organic direction, and increase production and consumption linkages. The district will also continue to convert seasonal rice to summer-autumn rice in areas with guaranteed irrigation water from the Nghen River main canal to reach a total planted area of 5,500 hectares by 2025; focus on applying scientific and technological advancements to production, strengthen mechanization, and enhance the role of agricultural service cooperatives…
