Ten Hag has yet to make his mark at Leverkusen. |
German media unanimously reported that Leverkusen's leadership began to show concern over the team's lackluster performance and lack of clarity in playing style under Ten Hag.
Ten Hag’s core principles, such as pressing and counter-attacking, were largely absent. It wasn’t just his on-field issues that drew criticism, either, as his preparation and pre-match speeches were. In contrast, his predecessor Xabi Alonso had excelled in these areas.
In addition, controversial tactical decisions have added to the pressure on Ten Hag. Moving new signing Aleix Garcia from his usual central position to the right wing has been seen as reducing the squad's strength and not making the most of the player's abilities.
Leverkusen spent the summer changing their squad, losing four key players Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Lukas Hradecky and Jonathan Tah, but still spent heavily to recruit Malik Tillman, Jarell Quansah, Loic Bade and Lucas Vazquez.
Ten Hag is now under heavy pressure to improve his form when he visits Werder Bremen on August 30. With a major shake-up in personnel and high expectations from investment, the results in the coming weeks will determine how patient Leverkusen's owners are with the Dutch tactician.
