According to the Bangkok Post , on the morning of August 16, the Speaker of the Thai Parliament, Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, convened a plenary session to elect a new Prime Minister. At the session, the Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai party, Sorawong Thiengthong, nominated Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the sole candidate for Prime Minister from the ruling coalition.

The voting results showed that Ms. Paetongtarn received 319 votes in favor, 145 against, and 27 abstentions. To become Prime Minister of Thailand, a candidate needs to receive a majority of the 493 members of the House of Representatives, which is a minimum of 247 votes. However, with these results, Ms. Paetongtarn still needs the approval of King Maha Vajiralongkorn to officially become Prime Minister of Thailand.

Ms. Paetongtarn will be Thailand's youngest Prime Minister and the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold the position, following her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, born in 1987, holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Chulalongkorn University and a Master of International Hotel Management from the University of Surrey in the UK. She is the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. She entered politics in 2021 and was one of the three Pheu Thai party candidates for prime minister in April 2023. She and her husband, Pitaka Suksawat, currently have one daughter and one son.

The election of Ms. Paetongtarn as Prime Minister of Thailand took place just two days after the Thai Constitutional Court ruled on August 14th to remove Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office, accusing him of violating the Constitution regarding ethical and integrity standards in appointing cabinet members.

Srettha Thavisin has become the fourth Thai Prime Minister to be removed from office by the Constitutional Court in the past 16 years. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Phumtham Wechayacha is currently serving as interim Prime Minister following Srettha's removal.
