On July 24, the 8th Political Consultation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba took place in Hanoi under the co-chair of Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu and First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba Gerardo Peñalver Portal.
This Political Consultation is part of Deputy Minister Gerardo Peñalver Portal's visit to Vietnam from July 22-25.
At the Political Consultation session, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu informed Deputy Minister Gerardo Peñalver Portal and the Cuban delegation about Vietnam's socio-economic situation in recent times and development orientations in the coming time.
Affirming that the Party, State and people of Vietnam always attach importance to the traditional solidarity, special friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba, Permanent Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu believes that the Party, State and people of Cuba will overcome current difficulties and challenges, successfully update the socio-economic model, improve people's lives, and prepare for the successful 9th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba in April 2026.
First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba Gerardo Peñalver Portal affirmed that Cuba always attaches importance to and wishes to further deepen the special traditional Vietnam-Cuba relationship, which was founded by President Ho Chi Minh and Leader Fidel Castro; and sincerely thanks the solidarity and wholehearted support that the Party, State and people of Vietnam have always given to Cuba over the past time.
Deputy Minister Gerardo Peñalver Portal also informed about the situation in Cuba, the results of the implementation of updating the socio-economic model and the measures Cuba is taking to overcome current difficulties and challenges.

Leaders of the two countries' Ministries of Foreign Affairs reviewed and evaluated cooperation between the two countries in many fields as well as cooperation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs; agreed on directions and measures to further deepen and comprehensively develop the special friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba; continue to closely coordinate to implement the results of the State visit to Cuba by General Secretary and President To Lam (September 2024), especially in important areas such as food production, energy, and biotechnology, thereby bringing trade and investment relations to match the good political relations between the two countries.
The two sides agreed to continue promoting high-level visits and contacts, effectively promoting cooperation mechanisms such as the Theoretical Workshop between the two Parties, the Intergovernmental Committee on Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation, and the Political Consultation between the two Foreign Ministries; enhancing exchanges between ministries, branches, localities and business communities of the two countries; agreeing to closely coordinate in organizing a series of activities to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Cuba diplomatic relations in 2025, the "Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Year".
The two sides also had in-depth discussions on international and regional issues of mutual concern, agreeing to continue consultation, close coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums of which Vietnam and Cuba are members.

After the Political Consultation session, Permanent Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu and First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba Gerardo Peñalver Portal signed the Political Consultation Plan for the 2026-2028 period between the two Foreign Ministries on behalf of the two countries' Foreign Ministries.
Previously, within the framework of the visit, the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba paid a courtesy visit to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son on the morning of July 23, met and worked with Mr. Nguyen Manh Tien, Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee for National Defense, Security and Foreign Affairs and Mr. Nguyen Xuan Sang, Deputy Minister of Construction; visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and laid a wreath at the Monument of Cuban National Hero José Marti; visited a number of economic establishments and historical and cultural relics in Hanoi.
