She accomplished this by creating videos of traditional dances on social media.

The 31-year-old female athlete Wu Liufang had won numerous world championships in balance beam and uneven bars for China. But her Olympic dream ended after a neck injury during the qualifying rounds for the 2012 London Olympics. She then officially retired from gymnastics in 2013.

After retiring from her career, she studied at Beijing Sport University. However, Wu Liufang's career path after graduation was quite bumpy. She joined a sports company with a salary of 4,000 yuan per month. But her mother's illness left the family in debt of 400,000 yuan, with monthly interest alone amounting to 1,200 yuan. Therefore, she had no choice but to earn money by filming videos of herself dancing provocatively. Despite this, these videos attracted 6 million followers.

However, Wu Liufang's provocative videos were heavily criticized by Olympic champion Guan Chenchen for "bringing shame to gymnastics." This criticism thrust Wu Liufang into the eye of public opinion. After the incident was reported by Chinese media, Wu Liufang faced intense backlash. Her account was locked, and her 6 million followers were deleted, leaving only 40,000.

Despite facing hardship, Wu Liufang didn't give up. She shifted her focus to creating videos about traditional costumes, Hanfu, and intangible cultural heritage. Her beauty quickly endeared her to viewers, even though she no longer pursued a sexy image. By 2026, she had paid off her 400,000 yuan debt, and her fan base had grown again to 900,000.

Now, Wu Liufang claims to have "reclaimed his honor." Speaking to the press, Wu Liufang said: "Back then, my family was poor, and I really wanted to earn money. Many people said what I did was shameful. But when my family faced financial difficulties, it was hard for me to maintain my dignity as I wished. Only now, after paying off all my debts, have I regained my dignity."
