Xương Giang Citadel was built by the Ming army in the 15th century (1407). At that time, it was a strong fortress of the Ming invaders, guarding the postal route from Guangxi (China) to Dong Quan (present-day Hanoi ). Through the ups and downs of history, only a few traces of the ancient Xương Giang Citadel remain, but its location and form are still preserved in historical records and many archaeological artifacts.

Xương Giang Temple was built on the site of the remains of the ancient Xương Giang citadel. |
Xương Giang Citadel is considered the center of the battle and played a decisive role in the Chi Lăng - Xương Giang Campaign in 1427, when Lê Lợi commanded the Lam Sơn rebels to attack the citadel, defeating the Ming army led by Liễu Thăng. This was the decisive victory for our nation's independence in the 15th century, overthrowing the two-decade-long rule of the Ming dynasty and opening a new chapter in the history of nation-building and national defense.
In 2009, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism decided to classify the Xương Giang Victory Historical Site as a national historical site. In 2012, the Provincial People's Committee decided to build a new Xương Giang temple on the site of the ancient Xương Giang citadel.
The Xương Giang Temple today is located in the center of the ancient Xương Giang citadel, built by the Ming Dynasty in 1407. The temple was built on an area of 10 hectares, with a total investment of over 230 billion VND (from the central government budget, provincial budget, and social contributions). The project was completed in early 2017, coinciding with the 590th anniversary of the Xương Giang victory. In 2019, the Prime Minister decided to classify the Xương Giang Victory Site as a Special National Monument. In 2020, the Provincial People's Committee decided to recognize the Xương Giang Victory Site as a tourist destination.
Every year, at the beginning of spring (the 6th and 7th days of the first lunar month), the Xuong Giang Festival is solemnly organized, attracting a large number of tourists from inside and outside the province.
