Việt NamViệt Nam30/05/2024

Poet Nguyen Doan Long (pen name Doan Long) was born in 1976, in Son Phu commune (Dinh Hoa), and is an art teacher at Hoang Ngan Secondary School, Diem Mac commune. Without going through formal writing classes, he came to literature innocently and passionately. Moreover, he has been tirelessly teaching the love of literature, painting and the desire to spread and preserve the cultural beauty of ATK Dinh Hoa land to many generations of students.

With more than 10 years of writing, poet Doan Long has many poems and prose published in books and newspapers of the Central and local levels (mainly poems). In addition to the poetry collections published together, he also has 4 separate collections including: Love for the Motherland (National Culture Publishing House in 2011); Where Poetry Grows (Thai Nguyen University Publishing House in 2018); Helping Him Up the Horse (Thai Nguyen University Publishing House in 2020); Drinking Wine in the Stilt House ( Hanoi Publishing House in 2022).

His poetry collections impress readers with their simplicity, sincere and rustic words filled with love for the homeland, love for couples associated with the life and people of ethnic minorities. The mountainous cultural style in his poems is expressed by his own artistic method, which is not only describing the scenery, people, and love of the mountainous people, but the author also conveys profound philosophies of life.

Interested in the topic of ethnic minorities in the mountainous region, poet Doan Long wrote to test himself, to understand, and to immerse himself in the ethnic colors. Sharing with us, he said: I always hope that my works on the topic of ethnic minorities in the mountainous region will spread more widely to readers, contributing to preserving the unique cultural features of the region, creating a unique cultural "background".

Poet Doan Long believes that this is also the responsibility of a son of Dinh Hoa, bringing his hometown culture into his works, both to nurture his passion for mountainous topics and to preserve, introduce, and promote the identity of the land and people of ATK Dinh Hoa to more people.

Arriving at Hoang Ngan Secondary School, where poet and teacher Doan Long works, we learned that the school is organizing many clubs to attract students to participate, including the Arts Club (literature and fine arts) led by teacher Doan Long. This club has 65 students from grades 6 to 9 participating (35 students in literature; 30 students in fine arts).

As the Head of the Art Club, Mr. Doan Long inspired and guided students on how to appreciate literary works in the school, shared the difficulties in writing a plot, and building character personalities in the story. He also shared with students how children's literature contributes to personality development, nurturing students' souls, and the significance of reading books to help each person further their passion for writing.

With the flexibility in organization and the rich and useful activities initiated by Mr. Doan Long, the students were really attracted and loved the subjects of Literature and Fine Arts.

In addition to the knowledge in books that students learn every day, participating in the Art Club, in the literature section, students learn many more basic skills, helping them to be confident in approaching and getting acquainted with literary works. The Literature Club also cultivates and nurtures their souls every day, helping them become people who live more responsibly towards the community.

In particular, seeing the talent of each student, Mr. Doan Long also encourages and guides them to freely create, write, read, and share their new compositions for others to listen to and give comments. In addition, Mr. Doan Long is also the person who connects and supports students to attend the annual Youth Literature Creation Camp organized by the Provincial Literature and Arts Association. In the 2022-2023 period alone, the Hoang Ngan Secondary School Art Club has over 20 students who are qualified to attend the Provincial Literature Creation Camp. It is gratifying that many students in the Club such as Ma Dieu Linh, Dao Thi Phuong Thanh, Tran Gia Linh, Pham Anh Mai... thanks to the guidance of the teacher, have had their short stories and poems published in newspapers, magazines, and broadcasting channels in and outside the province.

The art club also has an art section with the participation of students from many grades. With his expertise and many years of experience in the profession, Mr. Doan Long has inspired students who love painting to have the opportunity to hold a brush and paint pictures according to their preferences. In addition to paintings published in newspapers and magazines, Ma Dieu Linh, a student in the club, won second prize in the 7th Thai Nguyen Province Children's Art Competition and Exhibition in 2019; many students have paintings selected by the club to be published in newspapers and magazines, and displayed at the Thai Nguyen Province Children's Art Exhibition in 2023, such as Dao Thi Phuong Thanh, La Thi Uyen Nhi, Nguyen Thi Hoai An, Ma Thi Huyen Trang, etc.

This is the basis for students to boldly participate in competitions, exhibitions and nurture their dreams in the future. In the school's tradition room, Mr. Doan Long also proposed and was approved by the Board of Directors to display paintings and literary works of students, thereby encouraging and motivating students to make efforts in studying and creating literature and art.

Among many generations of students, poet and teacher Doan Long happily “showed off” that his youngest daughter Nguyen Minh Thu, who is studying in grade 11 at Binh Yen High School, is his most special student, in both Literature and Fine Arts. It is a joy that in addition to being a good student, she is also a talented painter and short story writer. He revealed: Two of my four published poetry collections had covers and illustrations drawn by my daughter.

Before parting, poet Doan Long “boasted” to us: In the fourth quarter of this year, he plans to publish a poetry collection called “Re-roofing the House”, consisting of 50 poems. The collection is in the final stages of manuscript completion and his daughter will continue to be asked by her father to illustrate the collection during the summer vacation. With the Art Club of Hoang Ngan Secondary School, he also came up with many ideas to maintain activities, so that the club can truly be a creative playground, an opportunity for students to compose literature, fine arts, etc.
