With the successful auction of the right to use the frequency band for 5G, VNPT becomes the second network operator in Vietnam to have this important "resource" in hand. Previously, on March 2, Viettel had Successfully auctioned the rights to use 5G radio frequencies for the 2.500 - 2.600 MHz band block with a term of 15 years. Thus, currently only MobiFone is the network operator in the Top 3 mobile telecommunications businesses with the largest market share in Vietnam that still does not own the frequency band for 5G.
The 3.700 - 3.800 MHz band (C2 band block) is a mid-range frequency band that is being sought and used by many major networks in the world thanks to its advantages of large bandwidth, strong speed, low latency and cost. Invest effectively, meeting today's advanced 5G networks. Previously, in the auction on March 14.3, due to not enough participating parties according to regulations, it was canceled and had to wait until March 19.3.
A representative of VNPT said that winning the auction for the C2 band block is very important, allowing businesses to choose many network equipment, reasonable 5G network deployment costs, meeting the 5G network deployment strategy (Vinaphone ) high speed in Vietnam.
Along with the 3.700 - 3.800 MHz frequency band, VNPT also owns the 1.800 MHz frequency band. "This will be a great advantage in promoting the 5G network in the near future, while also creating a premise for the development of the 6G network in the future," the network representative emphasized.
After winning the spectrum auction, VNPT will prepare to soon commercialize 5G in Vietnam. A representative of VNPT added that to increase the effectiveness of 5G deployment, the unit will deploy an infrastructure sharing cooperation model with the winning network operator in the 3.800 - 3.900 MHz band in the upcoming re-auction. This cooperation not only helps optimize the resources of network operators but also gives customers the best experience with 5G services.
According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), bands with higher frequencies will have large bandwidth, strong speed, low latency and high capacity, but are limited in coverage and easily obstructed by objects. Large physical objects (buildings, trees...).
Currently, the world's 5G frequency bands are divided into 4 groups including low-band (below 1.000 MHz), mid-range band 1 (1.000 - 2.600 MHz) and mid-range band 2 (3.500 - 7.000 MHz), finally high frequency (24.000 – 48.000 MHz). Each type has different advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, in reality, most network operators try to use many different types of frequency bands simultaneously to meet customer needs and optimize service quality.
Leaders of the Ministry of Information and Communications determined that 2024 will be the time to officially deploy 5G in Vietnam. According to the information and communications infrastructure planning for the period 2021 - 2030 announced by the Ministry, the target by 2025, the minimum average download speed of the 5G network in Vietnam is 100 Mbps. By 2030, 5G mobile broadband networks will cover 99% of the population, aiming to develop the next generation of advanced mobile networks.
"In 2024, the market is relatively ready for 5G, at least business customers in the fields of healthcare, oil and gas, transportation, smart cities...", Mr. Mai Liem Truc - former Permanent Deputy Minister The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (now the Ministry of Information and Communications), assessed the current status of 5G deployment in Vietnam at an event taking place in December 12.2023.
