More surprising effects of cocoa

While it can't replace a skin care routine, cocoa still offers real benefits for the skin in different forms.

Rub cocoa on skin to prevent aging

When applied to the skin, cocoa has anti-aging effects. Because cocoa is rich in flavonoids, plant compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Antioxidants play an important role in anti-aging, because they help protect the structure of collagen and elastin in the dermis from free radicals, helping to maintain the appearance of smooth, plump and youthful skin, according to the Women's Health website (USA).

According to dermatologist Nava Greenfield (USA), many previous studies have also shown that cocoa flavonoids can penetrate deeper into the skin's surface. "Cocoa flavonoids can penetrate the stratum corneum and reach the lower layers of the skin and act as antioxidants. This can increase the skin's ability to retain moisture and firmness over time."

You can try rubbing cocoa powder on your skin at home. Mix 1 teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder with 1 teaspoon of plain yogurt and a little honey, then apply it to your face for up to 15 minutes. Test it on a small area first, and if your skin starts to feel uncomfortable, wash it off immediately and use a soothing product. If it feels comfortable, you can use this mixture as an external skin care product.

Improve blood circulation

Cocoa doesn’t just work on the surface, it also supports skin health when ingested. Cocoa’s rich flavonoid content can affect blood circulation. “They have the ability to improve blood flow, which in turn protects collagen and elastin, helping the skin stay firm and healthy,” says Dr. Greenfield.

So how much cocoa should you consume to be effective? Dr. Greenfield recommends about 300 to 600 mg of flavonol-rich cocoa (a type of flavonoid) per day, which is about 20 to 30 grams of pure dark chocolate. If you use chocolate instead of cocoa powder, choose a product labeled “rich in flavonols” or containing at least 70 percent cocoa. You can add cocoa powder to smoothies or sprinkle it on desserts, or simply have a dark chocolate bar instead of milk chocolate when you want a snack.
