Another surprising benefit of cocoa.

While it can't replace a skincare routine, cocoa still offers real benefits for the skin regardless of how it's used.

Apply cocoa to the skin to combat aging.

When applied to the skin, cocoa has anti-aging effects. This is because cocoa is rich in flavonoids, plant compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Antioxidants play a crucial role in combating aging because they help protect the structure of collagen and elastin in the dermis from free radicals, supporting the maintenance of a smooth, plump, and youthful appearance of the skin, according to Women's Health (USA).

According to dermatologist Nava Greenfield (USA), many previous studies have also shown that cocoa flavonoids can penetrate deeper into the skin's surface. "Cocoa flavonoids can penetrate the stratum corneum and reach the lower layers of the skin, acting as an antioxidant. This can increase the skin's ability to retain moisture and improve its firmness over time."

You can try applying a cocoa mixture to your skin at home. Mix 1 teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder with 1 teaspoon of plain yogurt and a pinch of honey, then apply it to your face for up to 15 minutes. You should test it on a small area first; if your skin starts to feel uncomfortable, rinse it off immediately and use soothing products. If you feel comfortable, you can use this mixture as a topical skincare product.

Improve blood circulation

Beyond its surface effects, cocoa also supports skin health when absorbed into the body. Cocoa's abundant flavonoids can influence blood circulation. "They have the potential to improve blood flow, thereby protecting collagen and elastin, helping the skin maintain its firmness and health," says Dr. Greenfield.

So how much cocoa is effective? Dr. Greenfield suggests about 300-600 mg of flavonol-rich cocoa (a type of flavonoid compound) per day, equivalent to about 20-30 g of pure dark chocolate. If you use chocolate instead of cocoa powder, choose a product labeled "flavonol-rich" or containing at least 70% cocoa. You can add cocoa powder to smoothies, sprinkle it on desserts, or simply eat a bar of dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate when you want a snack.
