On May 12, Swiss singer Nemo won the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest with “The Code,” a pop-rap opera about the singer’s journey toward a genderless identity.

The Swiss contestant beat Croatian rock singer Baby Lasagna to win this year's Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden, with the highest scores from national juries and audiences around the world .

Nemo, 24, is the first non-binary person to win Eurovision. She is also the first Swiss to win the biggest European music contest since 1988, when Canadian singer Celine Dion competed as Switzerland.

At a press conference after his win, Nemo expressed pride in receiving the trophy for “people who dare to be themselves and people who need to be heard and understood.”

Nemo, whose full name is Nemo Mettler, beat out contestants from 24 other countries. All contestants had three minutes to perform in front of thousands of live viewers and an estimated 180 million television viewers worldwide.

Musical styles range from rock, disco, techno and rap, sometimes a combination of styles.

Although Eurovision's motto is "united in music," this year's event has faced opposition from many fans, as organizers agreed to allow Israel to participate amid the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.

On May 11, thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters took to the streets in the second march in a week in Malmo - Sweden's third largest city, where this year's Eurovision is taking place and has a large Muslim population, to protest against Israel's participation in the contest and call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Eurovision Song Contest first took place in 1956 and has been an important music event in Europe ever since.

Notably, this year's contest marks the 50th anniversary of the famous Swedish pop group ABBA winning Eurovision with the song “Waterloo.”

Eurovision 2023 will be held in the United Kingdom, as the 2022 winner Ukraine cannot host the event./.
