Stock market likely to rebound after strong selling session

The domestic stock market has just experienced a remarkable week when it closed at a historic high, but then fell sharply due to profit-taking pressure. According to experts, it is not impossible that the VN-Index will still have a recovery after the strong selling session on August 22.

The market started the new week with excitement, continuing to increase strongly, VN-Index headed towards the 1,700 point zone, especially on August 21, the booming banking stocks helped the market increase by more than 23 points, closing at a historical peak of 1,688 points.

However, negative signals appeared in the last trading session of the week, August 22. VN-Index closed down more than 42 points, close to 1,630 points with a sharp increase in liquidity. Banking stocks no longer showed their superior strength to support the market as in previous sessions, most stocks turned to decrease, some even hit the floor such as EIB,SHB , VPB.

At the end of the week of August 18 - August 22, VN-Index stopped at 1,645.47 points, up 15.47 points (+0.95%) compared to the previous weekend, marking the third consecutive week of increase.

Foreign investors net sold more than VND7.6 trillion on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange last week. After a period of active net buying in July, this group has been stepping up profit-taking in recent weeks.

Experts from Vietnam Construction Securities Joint Stock Company said that the market closed with a deep decrease and high liquidity, showing that the previous bullish signal was broken and there is a high possibility that selling pressure will increase sharply in the coming time.

The uptrend is still dominant with 3 consecutive weeks of increase, but the market's growth has shown signs of slowing down as the increase has decreased sharply compared to the previous 2 weeks. In addition, liquidity last week was at its peak with an explosive matching volume, increasing sharply (+75.1%) compared to the 20-week average.

However, the increase narrowed towards the end of the week, not commensurate with the explosion of liquidity. This is a sign that profit-taking selling pressure increased sharply during the week. However, it is not impossible that the VN-Index will still have a recovery after the strong selling session on August 22.

“We continue to maintain a cautious stance, not rushing to return to a new buying position, or even bottom-fishing in the down sessions of next week. If the VN-Index recovers to around 1,667 points in the next session, we will prioritize selling positions and reduce the proportion of stocks. Net buying positions need to patiently wait for the correction to bring the VN-Index back to the balanced accumulation zone,” this business expert recommended.

Expert Phan Tan Nhat, Head of Analysis, Saigon - Hanoi Securities Joint Stock Company (SHS), said that after the hot growth period, the market will be under strong selling pressure, short-term speculative positions will decline. The market will trade more slowly, liquidity will gradually decrease after continuously maintaining over VND50,000 billion in recent weeks. The market will return when the fundamental valuation factors and expectations of business results in the third quarter of 2025 are met.
