LESSON 1
STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

BPO - The restructuring and streamlining of the apparatus is being carried out urgently according to the schedule prescribed by the Central Government. In addition to the high support, consensus and agreement, there are concerns from civil servants, public employees and workers working in the state sector. However, if we look at it more broadly, the restructuring and streamlining revolution is also an opportunity for the organization to have a strong and elite team, and at the same time, an opportunity for each person to be ready for new experiences, try their hand in many new fields and make efforts with their own changes.

In fact, many people used to work in the state sector (public sector), but they decided to go out and start a business, trying their hand in a new environment, the private sector. Leaving their agencies and units, they all made efforts and had certain successes with their own choices. Each character is a story, they live meaningfully, optimistically and are inspiring positive changes and new directions.

Choosing a job and career path is an important decision for every individual. While many people view the public sector as a “safe” and stable option, the reality is that there are many other paths besides public sector employment.

The stories of those who have chosen to work in fields other than the state show that: they step out of their “comfort zone” and accept to leave stability, no longer receive state budget, all decisions must be calculated with their own money and effort. However, those experiences help them live with passion, responsibility and are trying to exploit their own potential and strengths.

THE TURNING POINT CHOICE

Despite having stable jobs in government agencies, for various reasons, many civil servants, public employees, and workers decide to quit their jobs to start their own businesses and fulfill their dreams and ambitions.

After 10 years working at the Department of Home Affairs of Binh Phuoc province, in 2022, Ms. Truong Thi Hoai faced an important choice: Continue with a stable job, expected and supported by her family, or pursue a challenging business path, fulfilling her own passion. Then, Ms. Hoai decided to turn to the private sector. Passionate about fashion, especially products made from linen and natural fibers, Ms. Hoai founded the fashion brand HONIGO, Tan Phu ward, Dong Xoai city.

After 3 years of officially quitting her job, she feels satisfied with her decision. Ms. Hoai said: Although the business path is not easy, every day she gets to do the job she loves, freely create and contribute in her own way makes her feel happy. She finds joy in each product, in the appreciation of customers and in building a brand of her own dreams.

Sitting in the beautiful, neatly decorated, and very tasteful HONIGO showroom, Ms. Hoai shared her joy with us: “I am satisfied with my current life, not only because I can develop my strengths but also because I feel satisfied when I live according to my passion. Instead of chasing fast fashion, I choose to focus on product quality, creating sophisticated designs with long-term value. The HONIGO brand to me not only has spiritual value, bringing good income for myself but also helps spread a green lifestyle, contributing to changing fashion consumption habits”.

Previously, when she was a civil servant, Ms. Hoai's job was mainly to consult on documents, a job that required precision but was somewhat formulaic and dry, everything happened regularly over the years. Now, when entering the business, she has to learn from scratch how to operate a fashion business unit. Every day, the job brings new challenges, new opportunities, forcing her to be flexible, creative and find her own direction. "I am happy because I dared to choose, dared to walk and dared to pursue this path. Now, I am in control of my life, free to develop in my own direction and most importantly, I can enjoy the full joy of my work" - Ms. Hoai excitedly shared.

LIFE IS YOUR OWN WAY

“Everyone has their own perspective on the job they choose. In fact, I also thought that I would stick with the government job until retirement, like many others. I never thought that one day I would leave the stability and do another job, because that was never in my life plan. However, my current job is the one I paved the way for and I am happy about that” - Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngan, Director of the Happiness Life Skills Education Center, Phuoc Long town, began her story like that.

With more than 27 years of experience in the teaching profession, having held many positions from teaching to team work and leadership, in 2023, Ms. Ngan made a change in her own direction when she was the principal of an elementary school in Phuoc Long town. Having been involved in the teaching profession, Ms. Ngan has a lot of affection for her students, memories with her colleagues and she also thought that she would contribute until she was old enough to work, but she decided to leave the state and choose her own path.

Leaving her “comfort zone”, she was able to pursue her passion of teaching life skills to students. Ms. Ngan shared: “When I was a teacher, my dream was to teach life skills to students. Because I thought: If I only rely on lessons in class or extracurricular activities, it would not be enough for them. I consider students as my own children, so I submitted a resignation letter to pursue my dream. Remembering that day was a struggle between staying with a stable job or going out to work.”

Through her efforts to “learn the job”, along with the support of her family, Ms. Ngan has now adapted and caught up with the operations of the Happiness Life Skills Education Center that she owns and finds the current working environment interesting, comfortable, and flexible. The extensive experience from the public sector and her personal creativity have helped her a lot in the private sector. Having been a primary school teacher, then participating in team work, then taking on the position of vice principal, and then principal, Ms. Ngan has implemented the methods of organizing models, using human resources, arranging class schedules, and operating the center scientifically and methodically.

Observing the Happiness Life Skills Education Center with many students, seeing her working quickly, we understand that it is happiness. From teaching to arranging schedules for teachers, registering students, recruiting students for classes... Ms. Ngan herself does it thoughtfully and happily. "Up to now, I feel that I have made the right choice. The results partly come from the experiences and skills I have accumulated while working in a state agency. I do not regret my decision and choice" - Ms. Ngan affirmed.

DETERMINED TO "FIGHT AGAINST THE SUN"

For Mr. Nguyen Van Cong, in 1998, becoming a "state employee" was the dream of many people, as well as a personal honor. His job at Binh Phuoc Radio and Television Station was very stable at that time, but in 2016 he boldly stepped out of his "comfort zone" to run the Nhat Thanh Fashion store in Dong Xoai city.

Starting his business, Mr. Cong spent a lot of time to thoroughly understand the market, research products, work with partners to distribute products as well as orient his work appropriately. “Business is not an easy job. Until now, I still have to learn more every day to operate. But I think the foundations from working in a state agency have helped me a lot, such as time discipline, high responsibility in performing tasks, solidarity in a group, sharing with each other in life, digital skills, and seeing the role of communication in developing a brand. And these foundations, along with the collision in business, have changed me” - Mr. Cong shared about his journey.

After many efforts and constant innovation, the fashion store owned by Mr. Cong has a more abundant income than his state job. To achieve the current results, Mr. Cong had to put himself on the scale to measure the gains and losses, bravely overcome his "safe zone" to rise up and the Nhat Thanh brand over the years has not only stopped at fashion.

Sharing his startup story with us when making the decision, Mr. Cong recalled: “When I quit, I felt regretful, but it was quick. Because there are still many opportunities out there and with the experience I have, when I move to a new job, I can do better. The more experience I have, the richer my life will be. Doing business makes me more active, this is something I feel very satisfied with.” For Mr. Cong, the most important thing is to be ready to face challenges and persevere.

Confiding to us, Ms. Hien, the wife who always accompanies Mr. Cong, said that she was surprised and regretful about his decision to quit his job. She knew that the family had the conditions and foundation for him to do business, but it was not easy, and it might not be successful. And Ms. Hien supported her husband's decision, worked with him, shared difficulties, and shared success and happiness.

“When I was working in the local youth union - Thong Nhat commune, Bu Dang district, I felt very safe. The job was dynamic and there were opportunities for personal development. However, I decided to try a new job, which is the production and trading of cashew nuts. At first, I was afraid of instability, but now I see that I have many opportunities to develop. Compared to working for the government, the current job pressure is very high, but more importantly, I have created value for myself, my family, and society. I am still working hard every day to bring Binh Phuoc's salted roasted cashew products closer to consumers.”

Mr. HOANG HONG TIEN, Director of Bazan One Member Co., Ltd., Bu Dang district

Not everyone is brave enough to leave their “comfort zone”. Those who leave their “comfort zone” in the public sector to seek new opportunities outside are not simply those who want to challenge themselves, but they are passionate and determined. In fact, with the knowledge they have learned from school and the experience they have accumulated while working in public agencies, many individuals have succeeded in choosing their own path and moving to the private sector. But no matter what field or environment they are in, they continue to contribute, work hard, develop themselves, and create many useful values for society. And they have a satisfactory and stable income.
