The lemon farming model has helped the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham (Hamlet 3, Tan Thanh Commune, Thu Thua District) improve their income, stabilize their lives, and escape poverty.
At the end of 2019, an unexpected tragedy struck, changing the course of her family's life. Her eldest daughter tragically died in a traffic accident. Overcoming the pain of losing her child, Ms. Thắm shouldered the burden of caring for her youngest son, who was in 9th grade. The family fell into the category of a poor household in the commune.
"Losing my child, I felt like I had no desire to live anymore. But thinking about my young son, I told myself I had to be strong and get back on my feet to take care of him," Thắm shared, her voice choked with emotion.
In 2020, she was introduced by the Tan Thanh Commune Women's Union to borrow 50 million VND from the District Branch of the Social Policy Bank, and she rented 0.7 hectares of land to grow lemons. Undeterred by sun and rain, she diligently cared for her orchard and actively learned cultivation techniques. After a while, her lemon orchard began to yield a stable harvest, producing about 1 ton per month, bringing in a profit of over 20 million VND.
Not relying solely on her lemon orchard, Ms. Tham also takes on sewing work at home to supplement her income. Thanks to her careful planning, saving, and sound investment, her family's life has gradually improved.
"At that time, my family's finances were really difficult. Thanks to the government's financial support, I had the opportunity to start over. Little by little, I accumulated, invested, and stabilized my life," Ms. Tham further shared.
By 2024, her family officially escaped poverty. Besides a stable income from her lemon orchard and garment manufacturing, she also saved up to renovate her house, creating better conditions for her son to continue his studies. Her and her husband's lives are becoming increasingly stable, gradually rising out of poverty sustainably.
The Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Tan Thanh Commune, Le Thi Ngoc Diem, said: "The Union always actively cooperates and supports members in accessing preferential loan sources, creating conditions for women to develop their economy and stabilize their lives. In 2024, the Union supported 4 member households to escape poverty, contributing to the successful implementation of poverty reduction and new rural development in the locality."
With her perseverance in overcoming difficulties and her successful lemon cultivation, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham not only affirms the role of women in developing the family economy but also spreads the spirit of overcoming hardship, inspiring many other women to strive to become wealthy in their own homeland.
