With its advantages, Quy Nhon Port ( Gia Lai ) is a strategic gateway to the Central and Central Highlands regions, along with a diverse and rich tourism resource system. Gia Lai is gradually asserting its position as a promising destination on the international cruise tourism map.
Referring to the story of regional and international connectivity in cruise tourism, Mr. Phan Xuan Anh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Viet Excursions Company, said that great opportunities are opening up for the cruise industry in Quy Nhon as the global maritime shift is strongly focused on Asia. Thanks to open policies, a long coastline, and quick processing procedures, Vietnam is attracting major shipping lines to leave China. To realize the development of cruise tourism, Mr. Phan Xuan Anh believes that: “Quy Nhon needs to quickly find a solution to the current difficult problem of overcoming the shortage of human resources. Because, as the number of cruise ships increases and Cam Ranh port becomes increasingly overloaded, Quy Nhon is the name that will capitalize on this flow thanks to having all the necessary conditions.”
Sharing her views on the development trends of cruise tourism, as well as discussing product development and effective exploitation of cruise passengers in the future, Ms. Doan Thi Thanh Tra, Deputy General Director of Saigontourist Travel Service Co., Ltd., said: “Currently, tourists not only want to quickly visit a seaport, but also want to gain a deeper understanding of the local culture, cuisine, lifestyle, traditional crafts, heritage, nature, and stories of the local people. This places new demands on destinations, which should not only take tourists for quick photo shoots and shopping before returning to the ship, but must have a theme, a highlight, and a different experience compared to other ports on the same itinerary.”
Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, noted that Vietnam possesses enormous potential for marine tourism, with cruise tourism being a segment with significant room for development amidst the strong global shift of cruise ship passengers towards Asia. However, the current reality is that we have only managed to welcome international cruise ships, while our capacity to operate our own ships to take tourists abroad or develop domestic routes remains untapped.
To address this bottleneck and proactively attract large influxes of tourists from global cruise lines, Mr. Ha Van Sieu shared: “Management agencies need to focus on comprehensive solutions. First and foremost, port infrastructure and services must be re-planned to increase attractiveness, while optimizing the logistics chain by closely connecting cruise tourism with air and rail transport systems, as well as onshore destinations and surrounding areas. Simultaneously, specialized human resource training and intensified promotion and branding of cruise tourism are inseparable steps.”
Mr. Tan Van Vuong, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, observed: “With the advantage of combining mountains, forests, islands, and heritage tourism, Da Nang has always been planned and oriented by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a key development center. In recent years, Da Nang has affirmed its global brand with the most beautiful beach on the planet and successfully hosted many major international events. In our development strategy, we identify cruise tourism as a particularly important segment thanks to the high-spending tourists.”
To fully exploit this potential, Mr. Vuong pointed out that the tourism industry needs coordinated efforts from many sides. First, immigration procedures for cruise ship passengers must be processed more quickly. Since Da Nang currently shares a cargo port with a tourist port, the city is aiming to build a specialized tourist port, integrating check-in points, shopping, and entertainment.
“The service infrastructure must be ensured down to the smallest details, such as providing a sufficient number of high-quality 45-seater buses, a team of skilled tour guides, and a system of restaurants and rest stops that meet standards… At the same time, attention must be paid to security, order, and environmental hygiene,” Mr. Vuong shared, affirming that the development of cruise tourism cannot be separated from a collaborative mindset.
