In an interview with LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky, Jassy, who took over the leadership role at Amazon after Jeff Bezos stepped down in 2021, stressed that a key element a person needs in the job is a "positive attitude."
Few people have a positive attitude towards work.
“I think how well you do, especially in your 20s, has a lot to do with attitude,” says the 56-year-old CEO.
Attitude is more than just being cheerful, he explains. Having a positive attitude means you work well in teams and respect deadlines, among other strengths.
According to Jassy, if you have the right mindset, you can confidently answer "yes" to questions like "Do you work hard? Can you focus on creating results instead of always objecting to everything? Do you do what you say you will do? Can you work in a team?"
He says these are simple things that are often overlooked. “People would be surprised at how rarely people have a positive attitude,” he adds. “I think that makes a big difference.”
Enthusiasm can help you take advantage of opportunities, such as taking on permanent assignments or taking on training programs, because you feel more confident stepping out of your comfort zone. You also believe that you can handle any challenges that arise.
Jassy was just 29 when he joined Amazon as a marketing director in 1997. After five years there, he was invited to be Bezos' first "secret" advisor, attending every CEO meeting.
Some of his Amazon colleagues advised him not to accept the offer, but Jassy said he chose to focus on the positive aspects of the job. He saw it as an opportunity to strengthen his leadership skills.
“I just thought that if what I was doing didn’t work for Jeff, or if I tried this for a few months, I could always try something else. But if I did make it work, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’d never heard of anything else like it,” he says. “And it was an incredible experience.”
A positive attitude brings many benefits.
It's important to note that Amazon's leadership has been criticized for its treatment of warehouse workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been accused of fostering a harsh workplace culture.
Jassy has previously acknowledged that Amazon could improve the way it treats employees. “I think if you have a company as large as Amazon, it’s almost like a small country,” Jassy said at the 2021 GeekWire Summit. “There are a lot of things you can do better.”
No matter what stage of your career you're in, having a positive attitude can help you build stronger relationships in the workplace. "You'll gain advocates and mentors much faster. People want people with good attitudes to succeed," he says.
Research has confirmed the benefits of a positive attitude in the workplace. It can help you be more productive, boost creativity, prevent burnout, and more.
“There are a lot of things you can't control at work, but you can control your attitude,” Jassy added.
