Caves have become art stages that attract tourists.

(PLVN) - Vietnam is a country blessed by nature with thousands of magnificent caves stretching from North to South. As tourists increasingly seek profound, unique, and artistic experiences, incorporating art into cave tourism is becoming a new trend with great potential but also full of challenges.

A "theater" dating back millions of years.

In recent years, many unique art programs have been organized in natural caves, contributing to opening new directions for tourism, culture, and experiences. Inside the Dragon Pearl Cave in Vung Duc (Quang Ninh), the "Searching for the Pearl" live art and tourism tour offers a unique experience for visitors, starting on June 4th, 2025. This is not just an art show, but also a journey to honor the legends and distinctive cultural identity of the Ha Long - Bai Tu Long region. Mr. Nguyen The Ky, Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council and one of the program's advisors, highly praised the idea of bringing art and cuisine into the cave, combining nature's gifts with human creativity.

Also during the Lunar New Year 2025, conductor Dong Quang Vinh and the New Life Symphony Orchestra gave a special performance at Ngoc Rong Cave (Quang Ninh). Conductor Dong Quang Vinh said that bringing the symphony orchestra into the cave was an exciting challenge. “Performing a symphony in a cave for the first time, we all felt excited and experienced a deep connection between music and nature, between the majestic rock formations and the echoes of the music,” he said.

Previously, several special concerts took place at Dau Go Cave ( Quang Ninh ). The first concert at Dau Go Cave was on November 19, 2005. Following that, there were several more concerts at the Dau Go Cave "theater" in 2014, as part of the Asia-Europe New Music Festival. What was remarkable was that these concerts were performed without the aid of any electronic sound equipment or technology, relying only on the pure and natural sounds of the musical instruments. Experts and tourists alike were amazed by the perfect acoustics of this million-year-old "theater," a gift from nature.

At Nhi Thanh Cave (Lang Son), a program of folk songs and dances showcasing cave art has also taken place. The folk melodies, deeply rooted in the cultural identity of Lang Son, were performed by artisans and artists from the Provincial Cultural Center and the Folk Song Preservation Association.

Caution is needed regarding the environment and landscape.

Art programs in caves in Vietnam are highly attractive to both domestic and international tourists. Bringing art into caves is not just an experimental initiative, but a significant step forward to elevate Vietnamese tourism, creating unique and distinctive products.

However, it can be seen that art programs in the caves only take place for a short time, are "seasonal," or are pilot programs, and there is no systematic planning for this type of art-tourism.

Furthermore, many people are concerned about the risk of environmental damage. If not properly organized, the large number of people could affect the humidity and microorganisms in the cave. According to tourism and environmental experts, not all caves are suitable for artistic activities. Some caves have sensitive ecosystems (home to bats, rare microorganisms, etc.) and should not be interfered with.

The selection of venues for art programs must be based on geological stability, safe accessibility, the ability to control the number of visitors, and must not negatively impact the environment, landscape, or the original values of the area.

The organizers are not allowed to bring auxiliary facilities such as kitchens, toilets, or garbage disposal areas inside the cave. The organizers need close coordination between the government, local people, and artists to ensure the event yields sustainable benefits. Instead of fragmented, isolated activities, the organizers should develop themed tourism-art chains…
