Every Lunar New Year, the flower market becomes vibrant with a myriad of colors. Besides peach and kumquat trees with unique shapes and forms, this year, the market for apricot blossoms has also attracted the attention of many flower and ornamental plant enthusiasts.
Many apricot blossom trees from Binh Dinh are being sold along the streets of Viet Tri city.
Apricot blossoms have traditionally been a symbol of spring during the Lunar New Year in Southern Vietnam. However, recently, due to cultural development and exchange, people in the province have tended to enjoy both peach and apricot blossoms during the Lunar New Year. Responding to customer demand, many traders have gone to great lengths to transport apricot blossom pots from southern provinces and cities to cater to the preferences of people in the ancestral land.
Along Hung Vuong and Tran Phu streets, in the Xuan flower market area of Viet Tri city, it's easy to spot vibrant yellow apricot blossom trees for sale. At a yellow apricot blossom stall on Tran Phu street, Gia Cam ward, there was a large number of customers stopping by to look, inquire about prices, and buy apricot blossoms.
Mr. Tran Van Huy, a trader selling apricot blossom trees, said: "This is the first year I've brought 200 yellow apricot blossom trees from Binh Dinh province to sell in Viet Tri. Most of them are large, over 1 meter tall, and 5 to 10 years old. Each tree is numbered and clearly marked with its height, width, and shape for easy selection by customers. Prices range from 1.8 million to 6.9 million VND per tree. The price depends on the tree's shape, age, and the quality of the flowers. The more unique, beautiful, and unusual the shape, the higher the price."
According to traders selling yellow apricot blossoms, this year's favorable weather means most of the trees are in the budding stage, preparing to bloom profusely in the days leading up to Tet. At this time, the demand for yellow apricot blossoms is increasing daily, although it has not yet reached the expectations of the traders, but there are many positive signs.
Addressing customer concerns about the difficulty of caring for apricot blossom trees due to the unsuitable weather conditions in Northern Vietnam, Mr. Huy, like many other apricot blossom tree vendors, advises customers to ensure they provide sufficient water so the trees will bloom evenly and retain their color. With proper care, they can enjoy the flowers until the end of January.
Bonsai apricot blossom trees, priced from 250,000 to 350,000 VND per tree, are a popular choice for many customers this Lunar New Year.
While carefully selecting and purchasing a bonsai apricot blossom tree with the criteria of a beautiful, compact, balanced, and harmonious shape, at a price of 250,000 - 350,000 VND/tree, Ms. Nguyen Thanh Huong from Van Co ward, Viet Tri city, said: "In recent years, besides peach blossoms and kumquats, I often choose to buy a potted apricot blossom tree to place on the coffee table to add a focal point to the space in my house and hope that the new year will bring peace, prosperity, and good fortune to my family."
Unlike the yellow apricot blossom, which prefers warm weather, the single-branch apricot blossom thrives in the cold, frosty winter. Amidst a forest of vibrant flowers and ornamental plants of all kinds, both domestic and foreign, the smallness, softness, and purity of the single-branch apricot blossom attract the attention of many locals, causing them to stop and admire it.
Viet Hang Garden has over 200 pots of apricot blossom trees, catering to the Tet flower-loving tradition of the people of Viet Tri at the Viet Tri Spring Flower Market 2025.
For six consecutive years, Viet Hang Garden, located in An Hoa village, Tan Linh commune, Ba Vi district, Hanoi, has opened a stall selling apricot blossom trees at the Viet Tri Spring Flower Market. Mr. Bui Anh Viet, the owner of the garden, said: "In the last three years, the trend of people buying apricot blossom trees to display during Tet (Lunar New Year) has increased two to three times compared to previous years. This year, in addition to the stall at the Viet Tri Spring Flower Market, I've opened another sales point in Zone 12, Thanh Mieu ward, to allow people to see and view the flowers more easily. Hopefully, this year we will sell about 300 trees, an increase of 50 trees compared to 2024."
Regarding the quality of this year's plum blossom trees, Mr. Viet said: Thanks to favorable weather, the plum blossom trees have beautiful shapes, many buds, and abundant flowers. The price of plum blossom trees ranges from 300,000 VND to tens of millions of VND per tree, with the price range from 300,000 VND to 3 million VND being the most popular.
Compared to other types of flowers, the single-branch plum blossom has the advantage of changing color throughout its flowering cycle. Initially, the buds are dark pink, but when the flowers bloom, they are pure white, evenly spaced, and overlapping. Especially as the flowers wither, the petals gradually turn red.
The uniqueness and diversity of flowers have added freshness to the Lunar New Year celebrations. However, most flower traders, especially those dealing in apricot blossoms, acknowledge that this year, due to the general economic difficulties, customers are more inclined to tighten their spending. Compared to last year, purchasing power is slower at this time, but it is expected that after the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, the demand for flowers and ornamental plants will increase. Regardless of the type of flower chosen for decoration, the beauty and fragrance of all flowers bring a warm and vibrant spring atmosphere, welcoming a new year of peace, abundance, and prosperity.
