Hoa Tien commune, Vi Thanh city ( Hau Giang province) is the most famous pineapple-growing area in the Mekong Delta region, known for its Cau Duc pineapples. In mid-September, the harvest season in the fields here is quite bustling.
Hoa Tien commune in Vi Thanh city (Hau Giang province) has long been known as the capital of Cau Duc pineapples, with superior quality compared to other areas in the Mekong Delta.
In addition, Cau Duc pineapples are widely grown in several communes of Vi Thanh City and Long My district (Hau Giang province), creating vast, continuous pineapple fields.
According to the Hau Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province's pineapple growing area currently reaches approximately 3,000 hectares, concentrated mainly in Vi Thanh City and Long My District.
In Vi Thanh alone, the area planted with pineapples has reached 2,800 hectares, the highest in the entire province. The city has established three cooperatives for planting, trading, and processing pineapple products.
Pineapple prices are currently down quite sharply compared to a few months ago. However, people in Hau Giang still maintain regular production and harvesting to supply this fruit to the market. Grade 1 pineapples are priced at around 7,000 VND/fruit, and after deducting costs, each hectare yields a profit of around 60 million VND.
The distinctive features of Cau Duc pineapples are their short stems, small cores, protruding eyes, slightly deep eye sockets, and characteristic sweet and fragrant flavor. The average weight is 1.5 - 2 kg per fruit.
Pineapples are one of the key agricultural products in Hau Giang province's agricultural development program for the period 2021-2025. By 2025, the province aims to achieve a planted area of 3,500 hectares and a production of 45,000 tons per year. This fruit is now not only sold fresh but is also a main ingredient for local people to produce delicious cakes, jams, candies, etc., which are favored by consumers.
Farmers in Hau Giang province take a break in their pineapple fields.
Cau Duc pineapple in Hau Giang province has been recognized as a trademark by the Intellectual Property Office. The province has also invested in seed sources and provided capital support to help people build farming models that adhere to food safety and hygiene standards, producing according to VietGAP standards.
