Goalkeeper Jakub Surovcik collapsed on the pitch after being hit by a flare. |
Czech football just witnessed one of its most chaotic nights in years when the derby between Slavia Prague and Sparta Prague was forced to stop in the final minutes.
Slavia Prague were leading 3-2 and were just minutes away from securing the championship. However, in the seventh minute of added time, hundreds of home fans unexpectedly stormed onto the Eden Arena pitch carrying flares and caused chaos.
Numerous flares were thrown directly onto the pitch, while some hooligans rushed towards the Sparta Prague fans' section and threw flares and other objects across to the opposite side.
The chaotic scene forced players from both teams to flee into the tunnel for safety.
Sparta Prague goalkeeper Jakub Surovcik was reportedly attacked during the chaos. He collapsed on the pitch and later spoke out angrily on social media.
"It is unacceptable for someone to run up to me, threaten me, and attack me during the match. I will take legal action," Surovcik wrote on his personal page.
According to local media, a Sparta Prague player and a member of the visiting team's medical staff were also assaulted.
What's noteworthy is that many of the remaining Slavia Prague fans in the stands also turned against the extremist group because their team was only minutes away from winning the championship.
Initially, the referee decided to temporarily suspend the match, but then officially annulled the result. The Sparta Prague players quickly boarded their buses and left the stadium.
President Jaroslav Tvrdík admitted the team could face severe penalties, even the risk of being handed a forfeit loss, despite being just moments away from winning the championship.
