| After six years of cultivation, Mr. Thuong's green pomelo orchard is now yielding a high harvest. |
Mr. Thuong's family owns over 3,000 square meters of garden land, but the soil conditions are not very favorable, mainly consisting of barren hillside land. Choosing which crops to plant to green the garden and generate economic benefits was no easy task. He had previously failed when planting fruit trees unsuitable for the local soil and climate. After much research and learning from experienced growers, in 2019, Mr. Thuong decided to remove the old crops and switch to planting green pomelos. Thanks to proper care, after three years, his green pomelo orchard began to bear its first fruits.
“Seeing the grapefruit trees laden with fruit and the quality of the grapefruits, I am very happy. When I switched to growing green-skinned grapefruits, I was hesitant. Because the soil in my garden is dry and barren, and green-skinned grapefruits require a lot of effort to cultivate, especially frequent watering during the dry season. Since planting them, the grapefruit orchard has not been affected by pests or diseases, and the yield is high,” Mr. Thuong said.
Leaving the orchard, Mr. Thuong led us to visit his family's economic forest, which spans over 7 hectares. Seeing firsthand the vast expanse of green acacia trees, nearly ready for harvest, truly revealed the fruits of his perseverance and determination to prosper on his homeland. "To get to where I am today, I had to endure many hardships; days of carrying meager meals, clearing overgrown vegetation, and digging holes to plant trees. In the past, with limited capital, where would I find the money to hire workers?" Mr. Thuong confided.
However, Mr. Thuong never lost heart. He thought that even though the land was barren and rocky, it would surely not disappoint those who cultivated it. According to Mr. Thuong, his homeland, though not fertile, had advantages, namely the vast hills and forests full of potential for livestock farming and agriculture. Having identified the right production direction, he became even more determined and persistent in pursuing that path. He gradually built up his economic foundation, focusing on fruit tree cultivation, cattle farming, and forestry. After much hard work, Mr. Thuong's family economy is now stable; annually, after deducting expenses, he earns over 200 million VND from livestock farming and agriculture.
Ms. Tran Thi Tinh, Party Secretary and Head of Khe Song village, said: "Not only is he a successful businessman, Mr. Thuong is also an active member of the local security force. With his personal efforts, developing his family's economy while actively participating in social work, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuong is one of the exemplary farmers of the village."
