Grape and apple capital in Khanh Hoa devastated after flood

After the historic flood swept through the lower reaches of the Cai Phan Rang River in Khanh Hoa province, many gardens were still covered in a gray color; mud still clung to greenhouses; fruit trees were broken, flooded, and died in the water.

In Phuoc Loi village (Ninh Phuoc commune), Mr. Nguyen Van Cang (50 years old) stepped on the hard, dry mud, wearing a spray bottle to prevent disease for the 1,200m2 vineyard. Looking at the piles of wilted grapes lying on the ground, Mr. Cang shook his head. If the flood had not been nearly 4m deep for many days, the whole garden would have yielded more than 1 ton of fruit, tens of millions of dong in profits now lost.

Next to that, the garden of Mr. Tran Van Chien (61 years old) was even more devastated. The entire 1,200m2 of apples that were ready for harvest were crushed. The 1,000m2 grape trellis was uprooted and collapsed. When the flood receded, Mr. Chien went to the garden and then quietly returned because he was so heartbroken. For many days, his family tried to save the trees but failed. The cost of seeds and rebuilding the trellis, which cost tens of millions of dong, was too great.

Apple orchards in Ninh Phuoc commune ( Khanh Hoa ) are still flooded.

More than 1km away, in Phuoc Khanh village, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hao (54 years old) was quietly checking each apple tree in his 1,600m2 garden. On the trellis, the apple trees were dark black, the leaves were yellow due to mud; at the base of the tree, the mud was as thick as a hand; some support poles had collapsed; garbage had come from somewhere and covered the path. In the past few days, his family had to cut off the fruit, prune the branches, and wash the trees to save the remaining trees. Like many other households, Mr. Hao plans to reinvest in the seeds and trellis early next year, but is still worried about unpredictable rain and floods, because to reestablish the garden, they need tens to hundreds of millions of dong.

Mr. Quang Thuc Doan, Chairman of Ninh Phuoc Commune People's Committee, said that not only grapes and apples were swept away, but also a series of areas of seedlings, irrigation systems, greenhouses and trellis pillars of the people were severely damaged after the flood. The locality is coordinating to review the damage and propose the province to support people to restore production.

The southern region of Khanh Hoa province (formerly Ninh Thuan ) is the largest grape growing area in the country, with more than 1,000 hectares, yielding 26,000 tons/year. Of which, nearly 300 hectares of grapes were damaged by floods, mainly concentrated in the areas of Ninh Phuoc, Phuoc Hau, Phuoc Dinh, Vinh Hai...

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Khanh Hoa province, floods have affected nearly 19,000 hectares of crops in the area. To proactively overcome the damage and guide people and businesses to restore agricultural production, the Department has requested its departments and units to coordinate with localities to urgently drain water, clean fields, improve soil after flooding; plow and prepare seeds for the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop according to the issued crop schedule.

The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection directed regional stations to coordinate with agricultural extension forces to go to the locality to directly guide and support damage recovery and re-production before December 15...
