(CLO) On Friday (December 13), President Emmanuel Macron appointed Francois Bayrou as France's fourth Prime Minister in 2024. However, shortly afterward, the left-wing opposition threatened a vote of no confidence against him.

Leaders of the far-left France Unbowed party said they would seek to remove Bayrou, and Marine Tondlier, leader of the Green Party, said she would support a no-confidence motion if Bayrou ignored the party's concerns about taxes and pensions.

Meanwhile, Jordan Bardella, chairman of the far-right National Front (RN) party, said the party would not call for an immediate no-confidence motion, while RN leader Marine Le Pen said Bayrou should listen to the opposition's budget aspirations.

Mr. Bayrou, 73, is expected to announce his list of ministers in the coming days, but may face similar difficulties to his predecessor Barnier amid a divided French Parliament with numerous opposition factions.

The political instability in France has raised doubts about whether Macron will be able to complete his second presidential term, which ends in 2027.

There has been no response yet from the conservative Les Republicains party, which supported the previous government, nor from the leaders of the Socialist Party.

Macron hopes Bayrou can prevent the no-confidence votes until at least July, when France can hold a new parliamentary election.

Mr. Bayrou, the founder of the Democratic Movement party, part of Mr. Macron's ruling coalition since 2017, has run for president on his own three times.

Macron appointed Bayrou as Justice Minister in 2017, but he resigned just weeks later amid an investigation into allegations of fraud in the recruitment of parliamentary assistants. Bayrou was cleared of fraud charges in 2024.

Bayrou's first real challenge will come in early 2025 when lawmakers need to pass the 2025 austerity budget bill. Barnier's previous budget bill, which aimed to save 60 billion euros, was deemed too "stingy" by both the far right and the left.
