Thac Ba hydroelectric dam releases floodwaters; Hanoi and three provinces urgently respond.

At 2 PM on August 16th, the Thac Ba hydroelectric reservoir opened two spillway gates.

Monitoring data shows that at 8:00 AM on August 16, 2024, the upstream water level of Thac Ba hydropower reservoir was at an elevation of 57.33m; the inflow to the reservoir was ^345m³ /s, and the outflow was ^261m³ /s.

In accordance with the operating procedures for interconnected reservoirs in the Red River basin as stipulated in Decision No. 740/QD-TTg dated June 17, 2019, of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development issued a directive instructing the Director of Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company to regulate flood levels on Thac Ba Reservoir.

Accordingly, Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company opened two spillway gates of the Thac Ba hydropower reservoir at 2 PM on August 16, 2024. The company will closely monitor rainfall and flood developments, structural safety, inflow into the reservoir, and upstream and downstream water levels, and promptly report to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Earlier that day, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development sent a document to four provinces and cities, including Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, and Hanoi, requesting them to focus on implementing measures to ensure downstream safety when operating the Thac Ba hydroelectric reservoir.

The main task is to immediately notify all levels of government, the public, and economic organizations operating along the river about the flood release from the Thac Ba hydroelectric reservoir, so that they can adjust production plans and minimize damage caused by the reservoir's flood release.
